With the new Fight Night event coming to Apex Legends, so too are tweaks to legends and bug fixes. Community outrage has forced some of the developers to give explanations for why Caustic is receiving buffs in the coming patch, as they seem to be at odds over how strong Caustic actually is in the game. This comes on the tail of many players being angry over changes in the Fight Night patch, particularly with the balance of legend abilities shifting.
The Apex Legends Season 7 Collection event Fight Night will kick off on January 5. Players can expect plenty of new cosmetics, possibly a new heirloom, as well as new LTMs and a town takeover that features a Pathfinder boxing arena. Along with bug fixes, Rampart will be getting a buff to her amped cover, and Caustic’s gas trap cooldown will be reduced in the new patch.
Fans are not pleased with Caustic receiving buffs, as well as recent weapons nerfs. Respawn Entertainment lead game designer Daniel Klein took to Twitter to explain some of the changes. According to Klein, the change to gas trap cooldown took about 10 minutes to implement, and within a couple of playtest games it was decided it did not have a negative effect on the game. The developers compared this to the changes made to Gibraltar’s arm shield, saying it was much easier and faster to make these changes than it was for the arm shield.
Klein elaborated further that developers felt Caustic was “one of the weakest characters in the game.” Many players disagreed with this statement and sounded off on Twitter about it. Pro Apex Legends players TSM Imperial Hal and his teammate Snipedown were among the many debating the strength of Caustic. Snipedown in particular had an interesting take as to why Caustic may seem weak, stating “Caustic is weak in open fields and on unorganized teams, how about we take away his ult gas after he’s killed so all end games aren’t 4 Caustic ults.” If played properly, Caustic doesn’t seem to be a weak legend on the surface.
From Respawn’s perspective, the most likely reason they believe Caustic is weak probably comes from their analytic data. Looking at both win-rate and pick-rate can give developers a feeling for the strength and popularity of a character. In this case, it seems the community disagrees with the determinations of the development team.
In the end, Klein stood by the buffs, and it appears Respawn will go ahead with the changes and continue tweaking. It is possible if the community is outraged enough that the team will revert this change. The changes will go live when Fight Night begins on January 5, but until then it remains to be seen how big of an impact the changes will have.
Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version in development.
