The content drop for Season 1 of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has seen the addition of two powerful melee weapons, one of which is the Sledgehammer. Like its counterpart, the Wakazashi Sword, unlocking the Sledgehammer requires players to complete an in-game challenge.
Unlike the Wakazashi Sword, the Sledgehammer has been marred by bugs that make obtaining the weapon a bit of a struggle for Black Ops Cold War players. Players have seen their Sledgehammer challenge progression be reset, or have been locked out even after completing all of the steps. Despite this, players who have gained access to the Sledgehammer are finding the Zombies mode contains a subtle nod to Thor’s iconic weapon: Mjolnir.
The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War saw the reintroduction of Treyarch’s popular Zombies mode. With this came new options for players, including multiplayer integration and ways to upgrade weapons. Treyarch is no stranger to secrets and references outside of the Call of Duty universe, and YouTuber TheGamingRevolution reveals another upon fully upgrading the Sledgehammer. The weapon gains a new name: Zjolnir, an obvious nod to the Asgardian weapon from Norse mythology.
First, players will want to equip the Sledgehammer in Zombies. To help unlock the Sledgehammer quicker, players can focus on utilizing perks like Tactical Masks and Ninja, as well as making sure to complete matches for kills to count. Next, players will need to upgrade the Sledgehammer to level 3 damage using the Pack-A-Punch machine. Finally, all that’s left is to add the Dead Wire ammo mod through the Pack-A-Punch mods section, which grants electrical damage. The result is a weapon that’s only a few steps away from being the iconic weapon.
Although the length of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s Sledgehammer doesn’t shorten to resemble Thor’s iconic weapon, it gains a new skin. Using this, players won’t look too unlike the God of Thunder when utilizing the upgraded Sledgehammer against hordes of the undead.
What players may find interesting, as TheGamingRevolution notes, is that Treyarch once included the weapon as an Easter egg all the way back in the Black Ops 2 campaign. It’s unclear whether Treyarch resurrected an old reference for players to enjoy or simply allowed for greater weapon choice, but one thing is for certain – this weapon packs a punch.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
