Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Ranked Mode May Be Coming Soon

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s use of skill-based matchmaking has proven to be highly controversial, with many fans wanting the game to simply have a ranked mode instead. While there’s no sign that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War SBMM will be going away, there is at least some indication that a proper ranked mode is going to be added to the game sooner rather than later.

According to Call of Duty series leaker Tom Henderson, who has accurately leaked CoD news in the past, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ranked play will be coming within the next few months. Henderson believes that the mode will be added to the popular FPS by March, though didn’t provide an exact release date. Apparently, it’s possible that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ranked mode will be added as part of Season 1, but there’s also the chance that it will instead be added to kick off Season 2 in the game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s ranked mode, when it is added to the game, is expected to be called League Play. League Play has been featured in most Call of Duty games since it was originally introduced in Black Ops 2, but was noticeably absent from 2019’s Modern WarfareCall of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s lack of a proper ranked mode was a big part of that game’s SBMM controversy, but for one reason or another, it was never added to the game.

And again, it must be stressed that just because Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is apparently getting a ranked mode, that doesn’t mean SBMM is going away for the other game modes. It’s entirely possible, and in fact very likely, that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will keep SBMM for the standard game modes while also introducing a proper ranked mode to the game. So fans should keep that in mind before they get too excited.

Fans should also keep in mind the possibility that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ranked mode isn’t coming at all. While Henderson is a proven Call of Duty leaker, it’s always possible that their information is inaccurate. Like with any leak, it’s best to take this news with a grain of salt until something official is announced.

On the bright side, if Henderson is correct about when Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ranked mode is coming, then more information should come sooner rather than later. Either fans will learn about it within the next few weeks while Season 1 is still live, or else they’ll learn about it during Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 2 – assuming it’s coming to the game at all, that is.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
