College Football Fiesta Bowl Fills Stands With PlayStation Characters

With COVID-19 stopping live crowds from being in attendance during football games, the NCAA’s PlayStation Fiesta Bowl continued the tradition of filling the stands with cardboard cutouts. With PlayStation sponsoring the game, however, the fake crowd members took on an awfully familiar appearance.

Rather than fans of Iowa State or Oregon, the two College teams playing in this year’s Fiesta Bowl, PlayStation characters filled the stands of the game. The titular star of the popular PS5 launch game Astro’s Playroom is seen many times in the audience, with the bot accompanied by other variations of the character seen in the games. Crash Bandicoot makes a few appearances in the crowd, with Peely and Jonesy from Fortnite also having a cameo.

Other PlayStation exclusive characters, such as Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai, can be seen in the Fiesta Bowls stands. Sackboy takes a break from his Big Adventure to watch the game, boasting a mohawk in some cutouts and a spacesuit in others. God of War’s Kratos and Atreus seem to be getting some father and son bonding in while watching the two NCAA teams clash, a wholesome activity that is a bit different from their usual fights against gods and monsters.

The final characters that can be seen are Horizon Zero Dawn’s Aloy and the dynamic duo of Ratchet and Clank. A large blue banner can be seen below the PlayStation figures, serving as a clever advertisement to buy a PS5. With Sony having already spent lots of money on PS5 ads, it is not too surprising that the tech giant decided to advertise on such a large scale by continuing its relationship with the NCAA and the Fiesta Bowl itself. While the many players that still want a PS5 may be sad to see another big promotion for the console, it is hard not to smile seeing so many beloved characters in the crowd of a football game.

Funnily enough, this is not the only time simulated football crowds have been influenced by gaming. The NFL featured a similar cutout setup back in November, only this time the stands were filled with Animal Crossing characters. From the museum curator Blathers to random player-created villagers, seeing the cute characters in such an unexpected location was plenty of fun. While fans would certainly like to get back to being in live attendance for sporting events, these special crowds are a great way to kill the time until that is possible once again.

There are still plenty of video game-related crowds that could fill the stands, with possibilities ranging from the massive cast of Overwatch to the gods filling the underworld of Hades. For now, though, this PlayStation crowd reigns supreme as the coolest video game fan setup thus far.
