Hitman 3 File Size Will be Surprisingly Reasonable | Game Rant

With its latest installment, Hitman 3, the Hitman developers are looking to optimize the games’ memory usage and reduce hard drive space. Not only will Hitman 3 be more optimized than Hitman and Hitman 2 were originally, but the changes will be retroactive to the earlier games.

This should come as a great relief to players as, before now, Hitman and Hitman 2 took up around 110 GB alone; more if the DLC is included. With the optimizations and the PS5’s impressive load times, gamers should be excited about how well the new Hitman is going to play.

This information originally comes from a ResetEra thread where a developer shared some technical information on the upcoming game, including confirming that the game’s engine was upgraded with screen space reflections. Like the texture compressions, this upgrade is also is also going to be applied to the earlier games in the series, so Hitman and Hitman 2 will have nicer looking surfaces as well. All total, with these updates the combined series should now only take up about 100GB of space in players’ hard drives, despite looking nicer than ever.

Hitman 3 was originally announced for the PS5 back in June of last year. Later announcements would confirm that the game is coming to Stadia and Switch as well. The series is famous for its amazing stealth gameplay and open-ended design, presenting countless options to the player in how they complete their missions, and encourages creative solutions. It’s also well known for its infamous level of difficulty.

Until recent console generations, with the surge in remasters/improved ports for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, retroactively going back to modify a game isn’t something that game developers would do very often. A vast majority of the time, when a developer put out a game, they would be done with it. Aside from small patches to address major bugs and exploits, most games went unchanged after launch, often leaving small bugs. So seeing a developer go out of their way to improve its old titles at no cost to their players is something somewhat new to the industry.

On the other hand, it also feels important to remember games as they were. Games can be works of art, (even if they don’t always make sense), and preserving them is preserving a major part of gaming history. Changing games retroactively can make it hard to see how things used to be, the tricks developers used to create beauty before modern graphics, and how games have grown and developed since then.

Hitman 3 is going to release for the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on January 20, 2021.
