Teamfight Tactics’ New Mechanics are Game-Changing | Game Rant

Teamfight Tactics often promises sweeping changes with its mid-set updates. For the Set 4 update, which will go live with Patch 11.2 on January 20, Riot Games may have outdone itself thought.

Riot Games recently posted a gameplay update ahead of the mid-set update, detailing the new content that will be coming to Teamfight Tactics in the next few weeks. While many players will focus on the new units and traits that are coming to Teamfight Tactics, the biggest changes are the new mechanics that are revealed. These newly-revealed mechanics will allow players to have more control over their item and champion choices while playing the game.

The Lucky Lantern is the method by which the new mechanics will be introduced, and is the signature feature of the mid-set update, which is titled “The Festival of Beasts.” The Lucky Lantern will appear to all Teamfight Tactics players during the game, providing the players with high-impact consumables to be used in the game. Each player will get the Lucky Lantern at the same time during the game, but players will not necessarily get the same consumables from the Lucky Lantern.

Some of the consumables that the Lucky Lantern will drop are things that seasoned players are already familiar with, such as gold, Neeko’s Help, or a Force of Nature, but the Lucky Lantern will also give players the ability to play Teamfight Tactics like never before. Inside, players can find one of four new consumables—Shop Reroller, Item Remover, Item Reroller, and Training Dummy—that can completely change the outlook of a match.

The Shop Reroller will give players the ability to control the shop, where players can buy new units to place onto their board, like never before. Previously, players were left at the mercy of the shop odds to see if they could get that next unit they needed. Now, they will be able to tilt the odds in their favor. With the Shop Reroller, players will get a free reroll of the shop with only units of the origin and class that they want. This will be determined by the origin and class of the unit the player uses the Shop Reroller on. By using the item strategically, on the right unit at the right time, players will get much higher odds that the shop will only be populated with the units they need.

Nothing is more frustrating to a Teamfight Tactics player than having a good item stuck on a champion that they don’t want to sell. Units that are strong early begin to fade as the game goes along, forcing the player to choose between the strong item they built or putting its units onto a better late-game unit. With the Item Remover, that dilemma is now gone. Players can use this consumable from the Lucky Lantern to instantly remove all the completed items from a unit without having to sell it. The items can then be easily transferred to another unit better suited to use them.

A long-standing issue that Teamfight Tactics players will face is getting items or item components that they no longer want or need. Being stuck with certain items prevents players from transitioning to a new composition when their existing comp is no longer working. Now, there is the Item Reroller to give back some flexibility to players who are stuck with useless items. Like the Item Remover, using this consumable on a champion will immediately pop the items off without destroying the champion, but the items that return to the player’s bench will be different from the ones that were equipped. Riot has also confirmed that this consumable cannot be used to reroll Spatula and Spatula items, which are extremely powerful in Teamfight Tactics, but they can use used to reroll completed items, not just components.

Finally, there is the Training Dummy, the only one of the new consumables in the Lucky Lantern that does not add a new gameplay mechanic but expands on an existing one. The Training Dummy is an additional unit, which does not count towards the player’s army limit. It does not attack but has enough health to absorb some of the enemy attacks.

The Training Dummy operates in a similar manner to Azir’s soldiers, but unlike the soldiers, they can be put on the board for free without the champion. Placing the Training Dummies in the proper configuration should give Teamfight Tactics players an advantage if they can block attacks or abilities that would have been lethal to the regular units. The Training Dummies can also be used to prevent enemy units from getting close enough to attack the player’s army, providing a pocket of security for important units.

Teamfight Tactics is available for mobile devices and PC.
