When players first arrive at the Nexus in Demon’s Souls, they’ll have only one way forward. They must enter the Gates of Boletaria and progress far enough to defeat the Phalanx. After accomplishing this, however, the rest of the world opens up and players are able to choose how they want to go through it. More likely than not, the first instinct of most players is to progress logically, completing all the areas in the first world that are available before moving on to the second, but it may be in the best interest of players to skip around a bit depending on their build.
In particular, world 4-1 has a lot of great loot that players can get if they are skilled enough. Naturally, this will prove very difficult as the enemies here are much more powerful than those of the earlier worlds, but Demon’s Souls rewards players with the tenacity to get through it. For the most part, these items that players can get early on in this world benefit magic users the most, but there is also a very powerful Dexterity based weapon and a useful ring that will help players stay alive throughout the rest of the game.
Though not especially powerful, the Talisman of God is a piece of equipment that will allow players to use Miracles. Although the Priest and the Temple Knight characters start with one, other classes will have to pick it up here or spend 5,000 Souls at the Filthy Woman’s shop. This item can be obtained before even passing through the first fog door, making it a solid choice for any character to slip in and out to get it. Be wary that even this short trek will be dangerous, as there are a number of Silver Skeletons blocking the path.
After obtaining the Talisman of God, players can head back to the Nexus and purchase Miracles from the Disciple of God. In the shop at the start of the game, players can purchase Heal, Antidote, Evacuate, and Hidden Soul. These spells are all incredibly useful, and they will allow players to stay alive with greater ease without needing a high Faith investment. The talisman can be found to the right of the first Fog Door on a corpse leaning up against a tree. For those struggling to defeat the Silver Skeletons, they are weak to bludgeoning damage and fire attacks, a fact that will come in handy later as well.
The Fragrant Ring is easily one of the best rings that magic users can equip in the game. Though the Royalty class starts with one, other classes will need to do a bit more work to earn it. When equipped, players regenerate mana at a rate of one MP every four seconds. Though this may not seem like much, it means that spellcasters don’t have to worry about saving their spells for a boss or anything like that. This can drastically alter a character’s playstyle, making them much more powerful in the process.
Getting this item is a bit more complicated, though. First, players need to rescue Ostrava of Boletaria in world 1-1, after which he will gift the player a Brass Telescope. Next, progress through the Island’s Edge level until coming across a bird’s nest. Sparkly the Crow will ask players to trade with them, and handing over the Brass Telescope will earn the player a Fragrant Ring. It should be said that this ring can be obtained in other ways as well, so those wanting to hang onto the telescope don’t have to do it this way.
A staple of the Souls franchise, the Uchigatana can also be found here. As one of three katana weapons in Demon’s Souls, it’s incredibly powerful for those that want to focus on a Dexterity build. Upgrading it down either the Sharp or Tearing path imbues the blade with an S scaling in Dexterity, the highest possible value. This means that characters with a high Dexterity stat will be able to tear through enemies easily. It does less damage than the other two katanas in the game but has the unique property of not draining the player’s life.
To get the Uchigatana, players will either have to fight a Vanguard Demon or use an underground tunnel full of Silver Skeletons. Truthfully, neither of these options are very appealing, but players that didn’t beat the Vanguard Demon in the tutorial can get their revenge now. After beating him, continue onwards towards the gate and find the Uchigatana on a corpse just waiting to be looted. For those wanting to take the secret path, be prepared to fight a lot of Silver Skeletons in tight spaces, and don’t forget to pack bludgeoning or fire damaging weapons and attacks.
For non-casting builds, the primary use of the Talisman of God and the Fragrant Ring is to create infinite heal spells to keep health up. Another way of doing this is to simply seek, out the Regenerator’s Ring, another powerful piece of equipment found in world 4-1. While equipped, this item will restore four health to the player every second even during combat, meaning they’ll always be healing and can stay in the fight much longer. It’s also a great way to conserve healing items for patient players or avoid the need to worry about the Heal miracle. Getting the Regenerator’s Ring is harder than any of the other items though.
After reaching the Fog Door that leads to the Island’s Edge boss, players need to take the door to their right (assuming they are facing the fog door. This will lead to an outdoor area on the side of a cliff, at which point players should turn right. Follow this path and keep an eye out for items, as the Regenerator’s Ring is here. It’s also possible to get to this area much eariler with a strange shortcut. Essentially, players need to get on top of the gate where the first Fog Door in the level was and then roll over the wall and down to the cliff pass. This is difficult to pull off and and doesn’t seem to be an intended method, though.
Demon’s Souls is available now on PS5.
