In December, both Mediatonic and Bethesda seemed to be teasing that a skin based on Doomguy/the Doom Slayer would be included in the insanely popular platformer battle royale Fall Guys. Now, Mediatonic has essentially confirmed that it is happening and will be revealed later today.
On the official Fall Guys Twitter account, an image of the announcement trailer was shared. It contains a crown, one of the game’s main forms of currency, lying on the ground in a wasteland of some sort, possibly Hell from the Doom games. And in the foreground, while it is a tad blurry, that is clearly meant to be the Doom Slayer himself, or at least a Fall Guy dressed as him.
The tweet even contains the phrase “Grab and fall, until it is done,” an obvious nod to the fan-favorite line from the 2016 Doom game: “Rip and tear, until it is done.” Fans won’t have to wait long for the trailer either. Mediatonic will be revealing it on a stream later today at 1pm EST/10am PT/6pm GMT on its Twitch channel.
This is only the latest crossover skin to be included in Fall Guys, and it likely won’t be the last. Various other video game have been added to the game as alternate costumes since it launched, from indie titles like Untitled Goose Game and to big franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog. It hasn’t stopped at games either. Movie monster Godzilla and content creators like Ninja and Mr. Beast have made surprise appearances. Mediatonic has even put in a skin based on the Aim Lab application in Steam.
All these amazing crossovers are a direct result of the game’s popularity, which it rapidly gained upon release. It has had stiff competition, though. While definitely one of the biggest indie games of 2020, it was only the second most searched game on Google, losing out to another breakout indie title, Among Us, which came out in 2018 but found belated success last year.
As for Doom, this wouldn’t be the first time it crossed over with a much less violent, more colorful game. Ever since the sequel, Doom Eternal, released on the same day as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it’s become popular to depict Doom Slayer and Isabelle as best friends.
Though the two series have never crossed over in any official capacity, Bethesda appears to have acknowledged the fan-made friendship. The official Doom Twitter account recently posted a New Year’s picture of the Doom Slayer and Isabelle Nendodroid figures holding hands.
Fall Guys is available on PC and PlayStation 4.
