Hood: Outlaws and Legends’ Ranger Character Seems a Lot Like Ezio

Developer Sumo Digital tends to be known for its racing games like Forza: Horizon 4 and super stylized games like Sackboy: A Big Adventure. However, the developer seems to be stepping out of its comfort zone with new pvp game Hood: Outlaws and Legends. This won’t be Sumo Digital’s first encounter with PvP games, but this will definitely be unique compared to any other games it has released previously.

Hood: Outlaws and Legends takes place in a medieval world where players must work together, or fight each other, to earn treasures—whether it be by stealth or brutal combat. The game won’t release for another few months, but one class of character has a unique look that’s incredibly similar to the iconic likeness of a different assassin, Ezio Auditore.

Hood: Outlaws and Legends aims to tell a much darker story than the Robin Hood many audiences have come to know and love over the years. Before Robin Hood was an altruist, he was an outlaw—and that’s the game’s inspiration for it all. Each playable character has a different inspiration from the characters of the Sherwood tale, but the actual Robin Hood inspired character is none other than the Ranger, also known as Hood.

Hood is the leader of the multi-person outlaw heist missions, and the townspeople rejoice when they hear of his return. Though this iteration of Robin Hood is more criminal than the Disney-esque version known today, Hood is still, in some ways, a hero. He may not be stealing from the rich to give to the poor, but he is stealing from those in power who abuse their positions and hurt the people they’re supposed to protect.

The catch with Hood, though, is that no one knows his true identity. Unlike the assassin he shares a likeness to, there’s an interesting detail that sets him apart from fan-favorite assassin Ezio Auditore. Hood has a piece of fabric that covers his face, concealing everyone, including players, from knowing his true identity. This was done intentionally, as Hood wasn’t modeled after one man, but rather the entire myth of Robin Hood. He’s faceless so anyone can pick up where he left off—much like The Princess Bride’s Dread Pirate Roberts.

Ezio Auditore is probably the Assassin’s Creed franchise’s most well-known assassin, and for good reason. He’s still the only character to date who’s had not one, but three games about his story and work for the Creed. Design-wise, Ezio and Hood have one key thing in common—signature headgear designed to conceal their identities. However, when comparing the two, Hood had the better idea to conceal their entire face rather than just the eyes and brow, like Ezio’s iconic robe does.

Notably, at least in Ezio’s Revelations outfit, the touch of fur around the hood too stands out, as well as the seemingly dull-blue-almost-grey color. It’s not an exact 1:1, but enough that Hood and Ezio could easily be mistaken at a distance.

Also, ideologically, these two characters have some interesting overlap but also stark differences. Ezio’s story started as revenge, to avenge his father and brothers who were killed for reasons unknown to him at the time. As his journey progressed, Ezio learned the ways of the Creed and how they “work in the dark to serve the light,” helping protect the people from those in positions of power who abused them.

This ideology sounds similar to Hood from Hood: Outlaws and Legends, but it wouldn’t be too bold to say that Hood cares more about getting treasure and riches rather than saving the people of the kingdom. Hood and their team steal from the rich and will kill the guards necessary to get the job done, but it doesn’t feel the same as the Creed doing its work. Hood and Ezio also excel at stealth-based gameplay, though Hood is an archer who specializes in long-distance takedowns where Ezio prefers to get up-close-and-personal with his hidden blade.

Hood: Outlaws and Legends’ Ranger shares some stylistic choices with Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio Auditore, but otherwise it seems their motivations are vastly different from each other. Players can experience Sumo Digital’s upcoming game from the perspective of the Ranger, Hunter, Brawler, or Mystic—though the tale isn’t as altruistic as other Robin Hood iterations.

Hood: Outlaws and Legends releases on May 10, though pre-orders can play as early as May 7 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
