Last year marked the beginning of a new console generation with the launch of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S. Since the release of both systems, practically everyone in the gaming community has been actively trying to get their hands on a next-gen system. Though, the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S and the subsequent attention the consoles received was arguably unprecedented, considering the ways in which it has impacted the world at large since then.
When the pre-orders for both systems went live, pandemonium ensued. Every single major retailer, both online and physical, quickly ran out of stock for both systems. In fact, it got to the point where people were selling PS5 pre-orders on Ebay a whole two months before the console even launched. Once the systems finally did launch, the consoles affected world commerce in ways that no one could have predicted at the time.
A couple months after the launch of the consoles, Ikea started using cardboard versions of the PS5 and Xbox Series X in order for customers to gauge the amount of space they will need to store the console in question when buying a new entertainment center. It seems like this is the first time any sort of major retailer, let alone a furniture retailer, has instituted something like this, but in a way, it makes a lot of sense.
Given the unique design of the PS5, it makes storing the console in a stable location an equally unique challenge for consumers. Likewise, the Xbox Series X can be stored horizontally, but with the placement of the console’s cooling fan works, many may prefer the console stand upright, therefore making it equally difficult to store. Thus, having these cardboard displays gives customers a great idea of what kind of entertainment center will work best for them.
However, what ultimately comes as a surprise is just how much these two systems have impacted the world economy just by simply existing. Arguably, the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 makes these consoles even more desirable. However, the fact that a furniture retailer is using cardboard displays with the correct dimensions for both consoles goes to show how many people have already purchased or are looking to purchase these consoles.
In any case, it will be interesting to see how long it takes before the hype surrounding the consoles dies down. The fact that an Amazon delivery driver was fired for presumably stealing a PS5 is crazy to think about considering that the demand for next-gen technology is higher then it has ever been. Hopefully, in the coming months, it will be easier for people to just buy either console without any stress.
