Releasing late last year to a divisive reception, Madden NFL 21 hasn’t exactly been in the good graces of its audience. From the game’s failure to introduce any new innovations since the previous year’s release to its line-up of egregious bugs and glitches, Madden players voiced their frustration with EA’s milking of the license, demanding the team fix the game and begin working towards delivering a more enticing entry at the tail-end of 2021.
It seems Madden‘s method to rekindling its fanbase’s passion for the series has been an unexpected one, however, as the title’s Twitter page has just teased that it’s currently in the process of delivering a crossover with SpongeBob SquarePants. That’s right, one of the year’s biggest sports games will somehow be merging with a children’s cartoon about a talking sea sponge and his underwater friends.
The announcement of the crossover doesn’t reveal too much, showcasing SpongeBob’s face above a reveal date of January 7. It seems whatever this strange promotion turns out to be, it won’t be long until players find out more, with Thursday allegedly giving fans a closer look at the latest addition to Madden 21. Whatever the crossover winds up being, it will likely tie-in to this Sunday’s Wild Card game between the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints, with the match slated to be presented by Nickelodeon due to the channel being owned by the same company as CBS Sports. A recent teaser for the match showcased that, alongside being broadcast on Nickelodeon, it would feature the channel’s wacky style and characters, with slime filters, a SpongeBob-focused pre-match countdown, and more.
As for what the in-game content might be, it seems wise to imagine that Madden will be getting some form of SpongeBob SquarePants–themed cosmetic or something similar. Regardless, it’s definitely a surprising promotion for both companies and one fans should keep their eyes on as Madden reveals more in just two days’ time.
Outside of its upcoming crossover, Madden 21 is currently dealing with the aftermath of its PlayStation 5 release, which initially came with a bug that prevented players from accessing online modes. SpongeBob SquarePants, on the other hand, is getting ready to drop a new spin-off show titled Kamp Koral, which follows, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward’s adventures when they were children. The character’s most recent video game adaptation, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, is also slated to get a mobile release, which will drop later this month.
Madden NFL 21 is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
