Since the Xbox Series X/S first launched back in November, the console has gained a lot of commercial attention across the world. Even now, many consumers are struggling to get their hands on an Xbox Series X. However, a recent trademark filed by Microsoft has led some fans to believe there is more in store for the console.
Ever since the console launched, a number of consumer issues have surfaced, with some Xbox Series X pre-orders being delayed as late as December 31 last year. Most retailers have been having an difficult time trying accommodating widespread demand for the console amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, some fans think a new model is already in the works.
Microsoft registered a trademark for the name Xbox Series XS on December 29, 2020. This trademark has led some fans to believe that believe that a new version of the system is already underway. The Xbox Series S was reported to be the smallest Xbox console ever created, and some fans believe this trademark could point to an even smaller version of the Xbox Series X.
The prospect of a new version of the console being released so soon after the launch of the Xbox Series X/S seems outlandish. It’s more likely that the term Xbox Series XS is in reference to Xbox Series X/S, the term used to refer to both the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S. This makes sense considering that up until now, next to no other major first-party publishers have launched two next-gen consoles at once.
On top of this, Microsoft launched the Xbox One S a full three years after the release of the base Xbox One, and in the case of the Xbox One X the console launched a full year after the Xbox One S. Therefore, it seems unlikely that a new version of the Xbox Series X/S is in development. If one is, it will probably take several years before the hypothetical system is even unveiled.
It has only been a couple months since the launch of the Xbox Series X/S, and for the most part the launch has been a success. Barring the complications that arose when the console first launched, and ongoing inventory issues that retailers like Amazon and Best Buy are currently going through, a lot of the people who have received the console are enjoying it. Hopefully, Microsoft can keep up that momentum going into 2021.
