Netflix has released the official trailer for a new docuseries Surviving Death, which explores the possibility of an afterlife. Premiering January 6, 2021, this six-part series is directed by Ricki Stern and based on the book of the same name by journalist Leslie Kean and combines science and spirituality.
The trailer opens with someone saying, “The question of what happens after we die has intrigued humans for as long as we’ve been around,” quickly setting up the basic question the docuseries will be exploring. The trailer follows with snippets of people talking about their near death experiences, as well as stories of ghosts, reincarnation, or connections with the afterlife. There are moments that sound more spiritual, talking about signs and messages in the world around us, and clips where people can be seen carrying out scientific experiments such as scanning brain activity.
Stories of death and the afterlife have been explored in fiction for years, whether from religious viewpoints, scientific viewpoints, or paranormal viewpoints. This series will investigate through all of these viewpoints in a non-fiction capacity. The trailer focuses largely on first-hand accounts, but there are also doctors, scientists, researchers, and mediums involved in the project. Surviving Death is trying to explore the possibility of an afterlife from all sides, although it has yet to be seen whether devoted skeptics were involved as well.
Surviving Death is not the only docuseries coming to Netflix soon. They recently released a trailer for The History of Swear Words, a series covering the history of swearing and hosted by actor Nicolas Cage. Netflix also recently announced that it would be producing a docuseries on the life of WWE chairman Vince McMahon. With the popularity of docuseries like Tiger King, Making a Murderer, and Cheer, it’s no surprise Netflix is interested in seeing which topics they can explore through the medium on their service.
Along with Surviving Death and other docuseries, Netflix continues to announce upcoming original movies and TV series. It remained the biggest streaming service in the world in 2020 in a year that was massive for streaming entertainment, largely because of the range of content available and the quality of its original shows and series.
Surviving Death premieres on Netflix on January 6, 2021.
