When Quibi finally kicked the bucket, it did so without much warning. Sure, many in the industry saw the company’s closure on the horizon, and even Quibi exclusives were dubious about the future of its market, but nobody expected it to happen so quickly and with so little time to prepare. As a result, quite a few shows got left with no platform, and no word on what might happen to them next.
Of course, it wouldn’t be easy to just transition elsewhere either. Quibi’s entire business model was unique: attempting to offer a suite of ten minute shows exclusively available on people’s phones. These “quick bites” of content would even inspire the company name, which mashed the two words together into “Quibi.” Almost as soon as it was established, the company went on the offensive.
For a service that no one had heard of, Quibi’s name was almost inescapable. The advertisements were everywhere, and the platform was spinning up an impressive number of exclusive shows featuring everyone from Kevin Hart to Anna Kendrick. Despite the millions of dollars spent on advertising, however, the company never saw returns in the form of actual subscribers, and the company eventually folded after several underwhelming marketing cycles, shutting the app down for good.
Quite a few of the platform’s exclusive shows now had no home and no idea what would come next, with many figuring that each show would live or die on a case by case basis. Now, however, Roku is reportedly in advanced talks with what’s left of the service to scoop up nearly everything they had on offer.
It’s currently unclear how much exactly this deal would cost, or exactly which shows can be grabbed, but it seems that Roku is interested in as much as it can get its hands on. While a source has reported to the A.V. Club that some contracts may make the transition difficult, Roku is aiming to take all of Quibi’s content and make it exclusively available on Roku’s dedicated channel.
Though Quibi itself may have been a bust, the deal would certainly be a big boost for Roku. Adding all of that pre-existing content to an already established service could be a significant draw, and it’s especially good news for pre-existing Roku owners who may have been interested in some of Quibi’s library, not to mention the shows that will get to transition smoothly over from the abandoned platform. Hopefully, the deal goes smoothly and the content can be made available yet again for those interested in checking it out.
