Although the dragons had been mentioned several times in past Elder Scrolls games, they didn’t make their first appearance until Skyrim, where they were not only the main antagonists of the story but were also the source of the Last Dragonborn’s power to Shout. Despite there being numerous word walls and Dragon Priest dungeons to explore in Skyrim that shed some light on the nature of dragons, there are still many questions that are left unanswered about their existence and history.
Some questions are answered among the hundreds of books that can be found lying around the wilderness and inside people’s homes, though there are many others that, even once the main story has ended, are still left unanswered and are open to the player’s interpretation.
10 How Did Such Powerful Creatures Go Extinct?
One of the first things players learn about the dragons is just how powerful even a single dragon can be in battle against men, as Alduin was able to raise Helgen to the ground single-handedly. While he is by far the most powerful dragon in existence, with his sole purpose being to devour the world to allow it to be remade, even the weakest dragons are able to easily take care of small armies with little trouble. With this in mind, it raises the question of how hundreds of these creatures were able to be defeated at all since the characters in Skyrim make it apparent that the Last Dragonborn is a more capable dragon killer than most trainer soldiers.
9 Why Is There Only One Skeletal Dragon?
One of the stranger interactions during the College of Winterhold questline is while exploring the Labyrinthian, where players are shown the history of Savos Aren and his actions in the past that lead him to abandon his friends to die inside the dungeon. After entering the dungeon, the player is attacked by a reanimated dragon, one of the few that the player battles indoors, but this one is only a skeleton and doesn’t seem to have been resurrected by Alduin. There are a near-endless number of dragon skeletons scattered around Skyrim, so it seems strange that there is only one skeletal dragon reanimated in all of Skyrim.
8 Why Are The Serpentine Dragons So Different?
The Dragonborn DLC introduced many strange creatures, some of which making a return to the Elder Scrolls series for the first time since Morrowind, though one of the strangest additions were the Serpentine Dragons, which begin to emerge in Solstheim once the player has reached level 50.
There are already many different varieties of dragon in Skyrim, but the Serpentine Dragons are much different in design and look like they would be more at home in Morrowind than Skryim, which seems to indicate that there are even more breeds of dragon in the other countries of Tamriel that the player doesn’t get to see.
7 Are They Actually The Children Of Akatosh?
Early on in the main story, Alduin claims to be the firstborn of Akatosh, the dragon god of time, but there are a few issues with this statement. For one, there is no definitive version of Akatosh that is consistent across all religions in Tamriel, as each race has its own view of the Nine Divines and the Daedric Princes, so unless the Imperial Pantheon is the sole, true religion, Alduin isn’t likely to call Akatosh by his Imperial name. Secondly, Alduin seems to serve more as a counterpart to several dragon gods involved in the flow of time, with him representing the end of time, so it is very unlikely that he is actually born of Akatosh and more likely that he is one of the et’Ada that existed before the formation of Mundus.
6 What Happened To Numinex’s Body?
This is less of a question about the dragons in general and more about what happened in Dragonsreach with Olaf One-Eye hundreds of years before Skyrim. After being captured and killed by Olaf, Numinex’s head was displayed about the Jarl’s throne to signify his dominance over the dragons, but throughout all of the game, the rest of Numinex’s skeleton is never seen. While it could have been buried out in the wilderness of Skyrim alongside the other dragons, this would also mean that Alduin may have tried to resurrect him without his skull present, which might have turned out poorly for both parties.
5 Could Alduin Resurrect A Dragon That Has Been Turned Into Armor And Weapons?
One of the cooler things the player can do with the remains of slain dragons is to turn them into very powerful, though very heavy, weapons and armor. Although the Last Dragonborn seems to be the only person in all of Skyrim to think to do this, it does raise the question of how far Alduin’s resurrection Thu’um can go. It seems like Alduin needs the entire remains of a dragon to bring them back to life, though the question remains of whether or not he can reanimate his fallen brethren once they have been turned into Dragonbone Armor.
4 Why Did Alduin Subjugate Men?
Many of the Dragon Priest dungeons in Skyrim, as well as Alduin’s Wall, depict the subjugation of man by Alduin, who used his immense power and influence to rule over the lesser beings until being sent out of time with the help of an Elder Scroll. Although the reason why he chose to do this in the first place is up for debate, that isn’t the biggest question to come from his history.
The elven races are arguably superior in every way, having greater magical power, living significantly longer, and having a much larger chip on their shoulder, while the races of men have a tendency to be rebellious in the face of anyone attempting to rule over them. With this in mind, it might have been wiser to rule over the elves instead of men.
3 Why Were They Buried In Shallow Graves?
Burying the dragons in such shallow graves made it very easy for Alduin to resurrect them once he returned, which seems to be a large oversight on whoever decided to bury them in the first place. The fact that they were buried at all is also questionable, since it is established that Dragonbone and Dragonscale armor is tougher than Daedric forged armor, so it would have made more sense to use the dragon’s remains rather than simply bury them.
2 Why Is Alduin The Only Dragon That Can Resurrect Other Dragons?
The Thu’um is spoken in the language of the dragons, so it should be no surprise that the dragons are the most capable beings when it comes to Shouts and using them both in and out of combat. However, among all the dragons in Skyrim, Alduin is the only one shown using the Slen Tiid Vo shout to bring dragons back to life. Whether or not this has something to do with his unique role in the universe or whether he never bothered to teach other dragons this power is up for debate, but it seems like something he should have taught at least one other dragon to prevent their extinction.
1 Why Is Alduin So Different?
There are many powerful dragons in Tamriel, but Alduin is on a whole other level entirely and is even able to travel to and from Sovngarde willingly, which is no small feat. This, once again, could simply come down to his unique role in the universe, but there is no definitive answer given as to why Alduin is so much more powerful than any other dragon. Even Paarthunax, his second in command and younger sibling, doesn’t reach anywhere close to Alduin’s power.
