In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, players might have run into some unique enemies when they venture underground. These enemies are called the Falmer, a species that not many in Skyrim know about. The Falmer dwell in Dwemer ruins and in the caves that can be found around Skyrim. By exploring a little bit, players can learn a little more about the species.
Players are able to learn about how the species came to be and why they stay underground. Some aspects of the Falmer must be learned by playing the game, while other aspects can be learned through the books and lore of the game.
10 Armor Made From Chaurus
The Dragonborn is able to loot armor from the Falmer and wear it for themselves. What players might not have realized is that the armor and shields the Falmer use are made from Chaurus Chitin. It makes sense, as the underground species only really had access to the Chaurus.
Players are able to use Chaurus Chitin to improve Falmer weapons and armor as well. This is the modern version of Falmer armor, with players being able to get ancient Falmer armor with the Dawnguard DLC installed.
9 They Are Blind
Living in the underground, the Falmer have no use for their eyes. Players might notice that they can sneak in front of Falmer pretty easily. This is because the species is now blind. Players will have an advantage against the enemy if their sneak is high enough, also.
Be warned though, the Falmer have an improved sense of sound. If a player uses magic or bumps into something, there is a good chance the Falmer near them will become hostile.
8 Descended From Snow Elves
The Falmer did not always look like the underground creatures they currently do. They are descended from a species known as the Snow Elves. Snow Elves were once the main inhabitants of Skyrim and had a very advanced society. Players are able to learn more about the society through the Dawnguard DLC.
The Snow Elves were once well-trained in magic and had a society that once rivaled the Altmer. Sadly with their decline, the history of the society has been lost to the people of Skyrim.
7 Two Snow Elves Still Exist
In the Dawnguard DLC, two Snow Elf brothers can be found by the player. One is named Knight-Paladin Gelebor and Arch-Curate Vyrthur. Vyrthur is a vampire, which explains how he was able to live for as long as he has. Vyrthur is an antagonist in the Dawnguard DLC and must be killed.
Despite this, Gelebor will tell the player he believes there are other groups of Snow Elves that still exist. Gelebor will continue to perform his tasks as Knight-Paladin, giving the player sunhallowed arrows if he is interacted with.
6 Snow Elves Sacked The City Of Saarthal
The Snow Elves were peaceful with the ancestors of the Nords for a short amount of time. The Snow Elves attacked the city, killing everyone but Ysgramor and two of his sons. Ysgramor went back to his homeland, returning with an army of 500 people.
A war started between the 500 soldiers and the Snow Elves. Ysgramor hunted down the Snow Elves and slaughtered them in revenge for the sacking of Saarthal. This killed a majority of the Snow Elves, with the rest finding refuge with the Dwemer.
5 Dwemer Created Falmer
After Ysgramor started to hunt down Snow Elves, some of the Snow Elves found refuge among the Dwemer. The Dwemer did not trust the Falmer, forcing the group to eat a toxic fungi that transformed them into what they currently look like. This is also part of what made the Falmer blind, along with living in the underground.
While some of the Falmer fled underground, a few groups spread out over areas of Skyrim. The ones who accepted the Dwemer offer of a safe place are the last remaining descendants of the Snow Elves — other than the two mentioned before.
4 Removed From Skyrim’s Surface By King Harald
One of Ysgramor’s descendants, named King Harald, was the first king of a united Skyrim. He was the 13th in the line of Ysgramor and was also the king that ordered a final campaign against the remaining Snow Elves. Because of this, the Snow Elves were no longer found on the surface of Skyrim.
Players can find a journal relating to this campaign. Inside of Forelhost is the journal of Skorm Snow-Strider, a legion commander who helped wipe out the remaining surface elves.
3 Used To Have Portal Technology
In the Dawnguard DLC, players are tasked with going to the Forgotten Vale. There is an unmarked location where players can activate a magical platform that opens portals to areas around the Forgotten Vale. 5 different Paragons can be found, used to teleport to certain areas.
After entering the Wayshrine of Resolution, players can find a cave that has a frost troll in it. Across the river from the cave is the location of the Paragon Platform. Players can swap out the 5 different Paragons after they find them, sending them to hidden locations.
2 Used To Have Black Souls
Much like other elves and higher creatures of Skyrim, the Falmer used to have Black Souls. Their elven status seems to have been revoked, as they now have White Souls instead. The Snow Elves players can find in the Forgotten Vale still have Black Souls, showing that at one time Falmer did too. Could they have fallen victim to yet another scheme of the Dwemer? Their people suffered so much after being forced underground. Yet, before the war, they appeared to have quite a successful civilization, in more ways than one.
1 Capture And Enslave Surface People
As players explore Blackreach, they might run into other surface races. What the player will notice is that the other races have the name Falmer Servant. These servants can range from Nords, Bretons, Bosmer, and Khajiit. Interestingly, it would seem that other elves can be enslaved by Falmer as well.
It is not known how the servants came to be servants, but there is no way for the player to liberate them. The servants will wear ragged robes and use low-tier weapons only. The Falmer must have some kind of power to be able to enslave surface races, either through magic or the same toxic fungi that the Dwemer used.
