Microsoft Rewards Launches New Xbox Gamerscore Challenge for January 2021

Xbox fans with a passion for achievement hunting have an exciting month ahead of them, as Microsoft has shared details regarding an achievement-based promotion for Microsoft Rewards. On any recent Xbox platform, gamers can rack up achievements in return for Microsoft Rewards points for the duration of January.

A solid rewards system that allowed Microsoft users to be charitable in the past, the company is returning the favor via this limited time event. Players have from now until January 26 to start racking up some Gamerscore, with the only pre-requisite being that the punch card is activated via the Microsoft Rewards app. Easy enough to find upon entering an Xbox console’s Microsoft Rewards area, filling out the punch card only requires that players collect achievements as they normally would.

Reddit user UndyingCandy shared more details about the ongoing program, confirming the limitations on just how far players can go when it comes to earning some free Microsoft Rewards points. For the next few weeks, players will get 1 Microsoft Rewards point per Gamerscore point – with the cap coming at 10,000 points. While this may disappoint some hardcore achievement hunters, such as the player that earned over 100,000 Gamerscore in just one month, most Xbox fans should be plenty busy racking up 10,000 points worth of achievements in January. Further, with no games excluded, any game available on Microsoft consoles qualifies for the limited time program.

With Microsoft Rewards points redeemable in exchange for a free Games with Gold membership as well as Xbox gift cards, achievement hunters surely will not want to miss out on this event. A great way to start the year, Microsoft is continuing to use punch card challenges as a fun way to get players invested in earning achievements. With the Xbox Hall of Fame and a free Xbox Series X on the line for achievement hunters back in October, it is nice to see Microsoft acknowledging its community of completionists.

With fun goals like this keeping Xbox players engaged in achievement hunting, the competition should take notes. Not only can Sony improve PlayStation’s trophies by incorporating things like monthly Gamerscore leaderboards, but the introduction of a new system or special event where players earn Sony Rewards points from trophy hunting would be great to see. With trophies not providing points on Sony Rewards for several months now, this Xbox event could serve as a reminder to Sony that occasional incentives for trophy hunting are rewarding and fun to pursue.

Regardless of whether Sony follows suit, Microsoft is clearly taking steps to make achievement hunting on Xbox even better than it was before. For players interested in getting some free gift cards, playing some easy, achievement-heavy games this January would be a wise idea.
