Super Mario Bros. 35 continues to receive robust post-launch support, even as the new year has begun. Nintendo’s version of a 2D Super Mario Bros. battle royale game remains a highlight of the Nintendo Online platform and Nintendo continues to capitalize on it. The next event in Super Mario Bros. 35 will officially begin today, January 7, and will run through Sunday, January 10. Returning is one of Super Mario Bros. 35‘s most-popular modes, it’s the Coin King Clash Special Battle.
In Coin King Clash, Super Mario Bros. 35 players have one simple goal: collect as many coins without dying as possible. Nintendo will also provide a course order for the Special Battle, which includes states like 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, and others that offer unique coin-collecting opportunities. Players can all but ignore the time and focus entirely on hunting down each and every coin hidden throughout each stage.
This will be the third time that Coin King Clash returns to Super Mario Bros. 35. It’s unclear if that’s because Coin King Clash is a popular mode in the game or if Nintendo is recycling its modes due to there being only a limited few available. Regardless, the first Coin King Clash was played in late October and the second in late November.
To be fair to Nintendo, up until now the Coin King Clash Special Battle is the only Special Battle to be repeated. Otherwise, there’s been a variety of Limited-Course Battles through specific stages, holiday events like A Halloween Spectacle, and thematic Special Battles like Bowser’s castles only and Bullet Bill stages. Since Super Mario Bros. 35 launched in October, Nintendo’s continued to offer fun new ways to play, and will likely continue to do so for some time.
Super Mario Bros. 35 is available now on Switch.
