Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Uses DualSense to Make Each Weapon Feel Even More Unique

While PlayStation fans were a little surprised to see Sony move away from the DualShock controller series with the PS5, the shift appears to have ultimately been a wise one. The PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller has been a big bright spot for Sony’s next generation console, offering new features like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Many games are taking advantage of these features to give players an even more immersive experiences, which has surprised plenty of those who have been able to try them out.

This will be especially true for Sony’s first party studios, which already appear to be setting up 2021 to be a great year for PS5 owners. One of the first releases this year is Insomniac’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which was showcased a few times last year at Sony’s digital events. The game looks to take advantage of the console’s added power, using the SSD to allow the dynamic duo to seamlessly and quickly transition through various dimensions. However, the game is also making sure to not forget about the system’s powerful new controller.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart game director Mike Daly recently highlighted how the team is taking advantage the new controller features. The adaptive triggers have been specially configured for each weapon, making their impact and handling feel completely unique from one another. When combined with the haptic feedback, controller speaker, and advanced visual effects, Insomniac has been able to make each weapon feel distinct from one another and “express their personality.”

Thankfully, there’s going to be a wide array of weapons for players to go hands on with including returning fan favorites and classic gear. However, previous gameplay trailers have revealed a number of new and unique weapons never seen before. Fans have already seen The Topiary Sprinkler, a glove weapon that plants turrets in the ground firing water at enemies turning them into plants that can be blown up. There’s also the Shatterbomb grenade, and more traditional weapons like the Burst Pistol and Enforcer Shotgun.

This isn’t actually the first time that Insomniac has attempted something like this. In fact, with the open world action game Sunset Overdrive, featured a system that essentially laid the foundation for Insomniac’s current model. Based on whichever weapon a player had equipped, the game would provide a different rumble pulse when fired, making each one feel a little unique. Thankfully, the studio already has a bit of experience with the PS5 hardware as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales also utilized the adaptive triggers to provide feedback and different sensations to the person playing. This experience has gone a long way into further pushing Ratchet and Clank’s iconic weapons even further than fans are used to.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will launch in early 2021, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
