Ever since its debut on the Nintendo 64, the Super Smash Bros. series has always been about the characters, and over the course of the series’ existence, countless characters have been requested by fans to make it into the games as playable fighters. While Super Smash Bros. Ultimate made many fans’ dreams come true with the inclusion of characters like Ridley and Banjo & Kazooie, there is still one notable character with a cult following who has yet to become their own playable fighter in the series.
Geno from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars has always been one of the more obscure fan-requested fighters, and while many thought the character would never see the light of day in Smash, that did change with the inclusion of a Geno Mii costume in Smash for 3DS & Wii U. While fans held out hope that he would appear as a fighter this time around, many dreams were crushed with the reveal of the return of the Geno Mii costume during Masahiro Sakurai’s Sephiroth livestream a few weeks ago. But now, some fans have taken matters into their own hands.
While some were happy to see Geno make a return to Smash at all, others thought the character would at least get the “deluxe” Mii costume treatment, as characters like Sans and Cuphead have received, coming with a mask-style head and music track to represent their respective series. Since fans were greeted with seemingly the same costume from the previous Smash game, others took it upon themselves to create a Mii Costume mod for Geno in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Over on Twitter, 3D game artist Sean Hicks recently announced that a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate mod he created making Geno a deluxe Mii costume is now available for download by players everywhere. While Hicks created the models and textures of the Geno Mii head, he worked with a team of other modders in order to to implement it into the game. On December 31, the mod was posted on GameBanana, a video game modding community, and can be downloaded right now. Of course, users will need to modify their Nintendo Switch to run custom firmware in order to install the mod and get it running in Ultimate.
Hicks expressed that he had many friends who are fans of Geno and Super Mario RPG, and were disappointed to see the same costume return to Ultimate, so he decided to create the deluxe mod to cheer them up. Now, although rumors of Geno making at as a fighter are seemingly debunked, fans of the obscure character can feel one step closer to having Geno in Smash with this new mod.
While some fans think that the official Geno Mii costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fake-out, leading to the character being revealed as the game’s final surprise DLC fighter, it is at least nice to see Geno have more recognition beyond a Spirit in the game. But for now, Smash fans continue to speculate as to who else might join Ultimate‘s roster as DLC.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available on the Nintendo Switch.
