A tragic piece of news just broke: Dave Creek, the lead character designer on popular show Bob’s Burgers, has reportedly died after a skydiving accident. The news was confirmed by his colleagues on social media, posting tributes to their longtime friend and co-worker. 20th Television, Fox Entertainment and Bento Box Entertainment also released a joint statement regarding his passing.
Little is known about his injuries or what caused the accident, only that Creek was rushed to the hospital after the incident in early January, and passed away a week later due to his injuries. The company statement expressed heartbreak over the news, and sent condolences to Creek’s friends and family who are currently grieving his loss: “He was not just an incredible talent but a beautiful person as well, and our hearts go out to his family, friends and all his colleagues at the show who loved him and are grieving today.” The company also referred to Creek as “an extraordinary” artist who had been with Bob’s Burgers from the very beginning of the show.
Creek graduated from CalArts in 2005, and worked on several animated projects afterwards before landing on Bob’s Burgers. Since he started work on the show in 2011, he has been credited on 79 episodes as either lead character designer or character designer, and has also been credited on Brickleberry and the more recent Central Park.
Several of his friends and co-workers posted tributes to Creek on social media, sharing images of him and his work in order to remember him. The posts celebrated not only his impressive work as a character designer, but his love of woodworking, talent for animation, and his passion for adventure.
After the news was broken by Cartoon Brew, Bob’s Burgers writer Wendy Molyneux was one of the first to respond, expressing how much his personality had impacted the show and his co-workers: “If you love Bob’s Burgers, you loved Dave Creek. He was an adventurous funny outgoing amazing artist and one of the most incredible, interesting people I ever met. I often thought that Dave really knew how to live, and I wish he got to live some more. Rest In Peace, buddy.”
Dave Creek leaves behind an impressive legacy that includes one of the most popular animated shows currently on television, but he was also a lively personality who clearly left a lasting mark on the people he worked with and befriended. Condolences go out to his friends and family during this difficult time.
