If Techland brings Dying Light 2 to consoles in 2021, it will be doing so without one of its long time contributors. Pawel Selinger, a two-decades-long Techland veteran, announced this week that he’s leaving the Dying Light 2 development team.
The news comes just after Techland started to tease updates about the development of its long-awaited sequel to Dying Light. The original zombie shooter game launched in 2014, and its follow up got a preview trailer at E3 2018. However, the developer didn’t release much concrete info about the progress of Dying Light 2 until the end of 2020.
A few weeks ago, Techland posted on its official Discord channel that it would offer “fresh updates” about Dying Light 2 shortly after 2021 kicked off. Now the team will have to move forward without Selinger, who broke the news of his departure on the professional social media site, LinkedIn.
“After over twenty-two years, I decided to end my cooperation with Techland,” Selinger wrote. “I would like to express my gratitude to the company that has allowed me to develop and fulfill myself for half of my life.” He added that he’ll always be rooting for Techland. He also said that he hopes Dying Light 2 and every other project his soon-to-be-former coworkers produce become “world hits.” It’s not clear what the departure of Selinger means for the production of Dying Light 2. Selinger’s bio on the social media site says he’s served as a writer, art director, and designer.
The question is whether or not Techland was caught off guard by the departure or whether the firm already has his replacement in mind or even on staff. When Techland first showed off Dying Light 2 at E3 2018, critics in the gaming community expressed excitement over a trailer some said showed improvement and refinement over its predecessor. The game promised branching narrative options and a reactive world that reflected a players’ decisions. The company also teased these new features on top of improvements on the movement and combat mechanics from the original Dying Light.
Info after the E3 2018 reveal stopped trickling out almost entirely for a few months. However, the title made another appearance at E3 the following year, and some experts believed there was a chance Techland’s newest project could arrive on store shelves in the spring of 2020. Instead, new development problems, including sexual misconduct allegations inside the studio, reportedly slowed down the progress of Dying Light 2 once more. Now, Techland is losing one of its long-serving employees in Selinger. He did not give a reason for his departure, despite making it clear he bore no ill will towards the company. The company hasn’t issued a statement on the departure.
