Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Fan Reimagines the Game as a PS1 Title

Releasing on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 back in 2006, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is still heralded as one of the best RPGs ever made, with Bethesda‘s expansive take on Cyrodiil raising the genre to new heights upon release. In the years since its debut, the game has cultivated a large fanbase online, especially in the meme community where the RPG’s wacky AI has created reams of hilarious clips.

However, one fan of the game on Twitter has recently reimagined it from a new perspective, with Anders Lundbjörk answering the question of what Oblivion would look like if it was a PlayStation 1 game. The result is a mix of the hilarious and the oddly terrifying, as Lundbjörk recreates the now-iconic in-game past-time of launching the Adoring Fan NPC off of Dive Rock.

The clip begins with the player arriving at the infamous Oblivion mountain locale, with the location accurately rebuilt using the low-poly style now associated with Sony’s first console. The audio also receives a significant downgrade, replicating the PlayStation 1‘s lower sound quality. As expected for any player taking a detour to Dive Rock, the video soon reveals that a low-poly rendition of The Adoring Fan stands watching them from the edge of the cliff, hilariously recounting his notorious “by Azura, by Azura” dialogue when approached. For those who are unaware of the memes surrounding the NPC, The Adoring Fan can become a follower after the player completes The Arena questline, constantly respawning when killed. As a result, a number of Oblivion players began knocking the annoying character off of Dive Rock.

The rest of the video showcases the events that unfold following the player’s attempt to launch The Adoring Fan to his untimely death, as they encounter one of the game’s teleporting guards, watch the terrible AI lead itself to an early grave, and even experience a hilarious cameo from Todd Howard himself. It’s a brilliant look at what Oblivion might look like had it released a decade earlier and yet another solid low-poly animation from Anders Lundbjörk.

For those who’ve not seen Lundbjörk’s previous video, the Dreamon Studios developer recently made headlines with his PlayStation 1 rendition of Cyberpunk 2077complete with T-posing NPCs, glitching out cars, and a bugged out Keanu Reeves. Hopefully, the developer will work on more clips in the future, with his low-poly reimaginings letting players look at games in a whole new light. This isn’t the first game to get a fun PS1 recreation, however, with the likes of The Last of Us 2 and Death Stranding also getting fun “demake” videos in the past.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is out now on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
