Not long ago, Microsoft began a promotion for the Xbox Series X where it sent Xbox Series X-themed Jenga sets to people. In some places, that promotion is still going on, and at least one influencer is mad about it.
The influencer in question is a Korean YouTuber whose main channel name translates to Suengwoo’s Dad. Said channel is dedicated to cooking, and is very popular, with a whole lot of videos on recipes and dishes, many with over one million views. Suengwoo’s Dad also has a secondary channel, which is used for non-cooking videos, many of which are gaming related.
It was no doubt this second channel that prompted Microsoft Korea to send Suengwoo’s Dad the gift of an Xbox Series X Jenga Tower. This promotional stunt did not go as well as Microsoft Korea probably hoped, as Suengwoo’s Dad had a rather negative reaction to the tower. As Xbox’s Major Nelson explained, the Towers were sent to promotional partners, but Suengwoo’s Dad’s video game content has nothing to do with Xbox. In fact, if there’s any game that he’s known for as much as his cooking content, it would probably be World of Warcraft.
Suengwoo’s Dad was very confused about the Jenga Tower, asking what he was supposed to do with it. He even echoed the response to Blizzard’s Diablo Immortal reveal, asking if it was an early April Fool’s joke. It certainly seems like a blunder on the part of Microsoft Korea, especially sine the Tower is not just a re-skin of regular Jenga as the YouTuber no doubt assumed. Several of the blocks have redeemable codes for games and other goodies on them, the total value of which comes to perhaps around $1,000 U.S. currency. That’s not the sort of thing that should be pushed onto the floor.
The response to Suengwoo’s Dad’s response has been mixed on whether his response was warranted or not. On the one hand, it’s clear that Microsoft Korea messed up in who they sent this promotional piece to. Suengwoo’s Dad doesn’t talk about Xbox. If it comes to video games, he’s far more likely to discuss the recent nerf to World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ dungeons than anything else.
On the other hand, the video is the very definition of looking a gift horse in the mouth. More than a promotional stunt, it’s a valuable Jenga tower, or at least the codes on it are. Maybe that’s why the video was deleted from YouTube. It may not be the most dramatic cooking-related video game drama, but it’s still a debacle on most fronts, and just a goofy mix-up all around.
