Madden NFL 21 had a rocky launch on last-gen consoles, turning many players away from this year’s iteration of the football sim. However, Madden NFL 21 has piqued interest over the past week due to its odd crossover with SpongeBob SquarePants — with EA Sports finally sharing what exactly this crossover will include.
First teased a few days ago, Madden NFL 21’s SpongeBob collaboration seemingly came out of nowhere. However, fans soon realized that the random event was happening due to Nickelodeon’s broadcast of the Wild Card game between the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. While the Madden and SpongeBob crossover is essentially just a massive advertisement for a special, kid-friendly version of this Sunday’s NFL matchup, that does not mean that the content is lazily done.
On the contrary, Madden NFL 21’s SpongeBob crossover is surprisingly deep, offering several new features for fans of the sport to enjoy. A specially designed stadium will be coming to the latest Madden game, with the location going by the name “Reef-Top.” Littered with decorations based on locations from the beloved SpongeBob Squarepants TV show, such as the main character’s pineapple home and the Krusty Krab, the arena is a perfect place to enjoy all of the limited-time content.
Aside from a fun new venue with a huge float of SpongeBob dancing around in the sky, new modes have been added to the game as well. “The Flying Dutchman’s Ghostly Grab” sees players leaping high into the sky to make absurd catches, while “Sandy’s Rocket Arm Rally” sees players being able to throw the pigskin from one end of the field to another. The final mode is called “The Goo Lagoon Bowl,” and it sees parts of the field covered in the oil-like material from the franchise. Fortunately, it only slows players down as opposed to killing them like in the successful game SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom.
The final addition to the game sees NFL stars wearing special attire based on everyone’s favorite sea sponge. Likely to be received just as positively as the recent updates made to franchise mode, the fan-pleasing SpongeBob gear is sure to put a smile on the face of new and old fans alike. With sleeves, shorts, and helmets resembling SpongeBob’s outfit as well as the Bikini Bottom “sky,” this Madden NFL 21 crossover takes full advantage of the Nickelodeon brand.
For players more interested in SpongeBob than sports, the playoff game this event is hyping up is set to include a special halftime surprise. At the midway point of the game, players can expect a teaser for the SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff show Kamp Koral — a prequel series focused on when the original cast of characters were kids.
