Valve, the creative studio behind hit popular games such as the Half-Life series and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, is currently searching for a new psychologist for its location in Bellevue, Washington. The company’s website claims that it is looking for someone with a wide range of skills and expertise.
Not only that, but the expectations for psychologists at Valve is to collaborate with their peers and deliver new initiatives to the company through their research. In the past, these psychologists have helped Valve conduct experiments on eye-tracking and sweat detection for games. Interestingly enough, this would not be the most bizarre requirement for a job; a Bungie job listing once asked if applicants were comfortable working with “whimsical characters,” so the possibilities are endless.
Part of the requirements for the psychologist position this time around is to create compelling gameplay experiences for Valve titles and improve playtesting methods. After the success of the newest Half-Life: Alyx game, it seems the company is most likely looking for ways to continue pushing the limits for the future of gaming consoles.
The other tasks that are expected from the worker listed on the company website are to research human behavior with customer service on the Steam platform, analyze Valve’s gameplay and financial, statistical data, investigate new hardware technologies, create experiments to evaluate gameplay design choices, and acquire data that Valve’s products and business practices. In summary, the person holding the position is expected to utilize all the fundamentals of experimental design, statistics, human behavior, and research methods to help Valve service its global audience.
The qualifications for the position that Valve states that candidates must have a minimum of; A Graduate degree in psychology or a related field, knowledge of statistics, research experience with the development of products and services, and experience in cognitive and human factors of psychology. Valve would also like someone who is knowledgeable with various coding languages like C++, Python, or PHP as an added boost.
