One week from now WandaVision is set to pick up the mantle from The Mandalorian as Disney Plus’ newest and shiniest exclusive. That’s why over the past few days WandaVision’s social media accounts have been sharing teasers non-stop with fans.
WandaVision is the first of many new Marvel miniseries heading to Disney plus in 2021, with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki soon to follow, while Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel will close out the year. So far everything shown from WandaVision suggests the unique series aims to blend sitcoms of old with 21st-century superhero action.
Perhaps partly due to that very specific take, WandaVision will be Marvel Studios’ most family-friendly production to this date. According to Disney Plus’ own site, the show will have a TV-PG in the United States, slightly lower than the typical MCU film, all of which stick to a PG-13 rating. Though measured on different scales, the PG-13 rating is roughly equivalent to television’s TV-14 bracket, so expect a bit less action than usual from WandaVision’s suburban setting.
As stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany have remarked in their press rounds, the series is unlike anything seen on TV before. The same goes for producer Kevin Feige, who’s stated that something like WandaVision simply couldn’t have been made for movie theaters and is only possible on streaming. Die-hard MCU action fans shouldn’t be too discouraged though, as the UK’s “12+” rating for the series remains with the rest of Marvel films when released in that territory.
Throughout its nine episodes, WandaVision is bound to take on different forms, something which has been echoed by producers, so fans should not simply expect a sitcom take for everyone of Scarlet Witch and Vision’s adventures. After all, WandaVision’s possible play on alternate realities and parallel universes is also supposed to have significant consequences on the developments of events in the rest of the MCU and maybe some surprise guest appearances as well.
WandaVision will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on January 15, 2021.
