Most fans can agree that Japan is the home of all things Pokemon. Offering a range of cute and bizarre merchandise, there is no shortage of Pokemon-themed items that fans can bring home. This includes a recently announced oversized Gengar plush that lets its owners sleep or lay down on its tongue.
The Pokemon Company has definitely found a profitable market in creating Pokemon-themed plush toys for its loyal fans. Just last year, the company partnered with Build-A-Bear to give fans a chance to build their own Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon. And last November 2020, a new pre-order opened for a napping Gengar and napping Pikachu plush toy that will be released in April 2021. This shows that Gengar is truly popular and in-demand, no matter how scary its move set is in the games.
In partnership with the Premium Bandai online store, The Pokemon Company is opening pre-orders for a huge Gengar plush that rolls out its tongue like a narrow blanket, allowing fans to lay down or sleep on it. According to Google Translate, the plush is called “Gengar, I absolutely want to be licked,” which makes a comical reference to the toy’s unignorably long tongue and the Pokemon’s Ghost-type attack move Lick.
The Pokemon–themed plush stands at 48cm high and has a width of 53cm. When the tongue is rolled out, the length of the toy extends up to 170cm. The velvet texture of the tongue allows it to be used as makeshift duvet or blanket, depending on the owner’s preference. The Gengar plush pre-order was just uploaded on the site on January 8, 2021 with no pre-order timeline specified. This means that orders will be kept open until supplies last, with delivery estimated for June 2021.
The pre-order site also shows owners other ways to use the giant stuffed Gengar. With pictures to demonstrate, fans can roll the tongue and use it as a pillow, or place their head into the plush’s open mouth for some privacy when napping. Though it seems like a great idea to bring the plush to the office for nap breaks, the Gengar weights around 65kg, making it tough to carry around.
Priced at 25,950 Yen or 249 USD, the Gengar plush is quite expensive, though not as expensive as other Pokemon-themed toys. It is also only exclusive to Japan, so Gengar fans may have to find other ways to get the item or settle for other Pokemon collaborations that are available nearest them.
