The Pokemon franchise has found massive success in the trading card game market, with the Pokemon TCG proving to have incredible staying power in the industry. Pokemon‘s rival franchise Digimon has had its fair share of trading card games in the past, though nothing that can match with the Pokemon TCG. Digimon‘s next attempt at having a truly big trading card game was set to kick off at the end of this month, but unfortunately, plans have changed.
The Digimon Card Game starter decks have been delayed. In a statement released on Twitter, the official account for the Digimon Card Game English version confirmed that the starter decks have had production hiccups due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A specific new release date wasn’t confirmed in the announcement, but it was said that fans should expect to see the cards in stores around mid-February.
The first three Digimon Card Game starter decks are themed after three of the original anime series’ main characters. One starter deck is based on Tai and Agumon, another is based on Matt and Gabumon, and the third is based on TK and Patamon. Sora, Kairi, Joe, and their respective Digimon are also featured in the starter decks, though Izzy and Mimi are nowhere to be found so far. The decks were set to retail for $9.99 and would include not only the starter deck cards, but a Digimon Card Game booster pack as well.
There is no indication that the Digimon Card Game booster packs will experience the same delay as the starter decks, so it’s possible fans will be able to find them in stores come January 29 as was originally scheduled. However, it’s possible that Bandai Namco Entertainment has also pushed back the first set of booster packs as well, so fans should keep that in mind.
In the meantime, it remains to be seen how this delay may impact Bandai Namco’s other plans for the Digimon Card Game in 2021. The second set of booster packs were scheduled to release on February 26, but perhaps it will be pushed back now as well since the starter decks aren’t coming until mid-February. The second booster packs feature some Digimon from later Digimon anime seasons on the front, so it will be interesting to see if the Digidestined from those seasons will be getting their own starter decks in the future as well.
That will likely depend on whether or not the Digimon Card Game is a success. Fans will find out if it lives up to the hype once the starter decks come out in February, assuming there are no further COVID-19 related delays.
