Nintendo Switch Surpasses The 3DS In Sales | Game Rant

With the gaming world heavily focused on the recently released PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, some may have overlooked the Nintendo Switch’s incredibly successful year. As the Switch continues with an impressive momentum rivaling some of the gaming industry’s biggest hardware success stories, the handheld and console hybrid reached a new crucial milestone.

According to sales tracking website VGChartz, the Nintendo Switch has surpassed the Nintendo 3DS in overall lifetime sales. VGChartz notes that the Nintendo Switch has sold over 76 million units, beating out the Nintendo 3DS’ lifetime unit sales of 75,906,986 units.

While this news isn’t all that surprising, there is reason to wait for an official announcement by Nintendo. VGChartz is not considered an official source with regards to hardware and software sales, focusing heavily on estimations. The report has spurred notable changes to various sales focused information sources however, with the Wikipedia entry for highest selling console hardware now noting the Switch above the 3DS. This news comes just months after Nintendo removed the 3DS sections from its official website.

This is not the first time the Switch made a notable move up the best selling consoles list against previous Nintendo hardware. It was back in August 2020 that reports found that the Switch had outsold the original Nintendo Entertainment System in lifetime sales. It was then reported that the Nintendo Switch had broken the 62 Million sales mark, meaning that within half a year, Nintendo’s latest hardware sold just under 15 million units if the reports are accurate.

With the Switch now placed as the eleventh best selling gaming hardware of all time, there is a good chance it will crack the top ten soon enough. The tenth spot is currently held by the PlayStation Portable which sits at an estimated 80 million. Considering the current momentum of the Switch, alongside rumors of an impending Nintendo Switch Pro, it may even make the top ten in the coming months.

While the Switch outselling the 3DS is an incredible achievement, it isn’t all that surprising. The Nintendo 3DS had a notoriously rough launch, prompting Nintendo to introduce the “Ambassador Program” for early adopters. While it was able to gain momentum, thanks in part to a solid stream of releases in later years, it never came close to the same fanfare the Switch received upon launch. The real question surrounding the Switch’s sales is whether it can overtake either the Nintendo Wii or the Nintendo DS. With each being the highest selling Nintendo console and handheld respectively, there is a possibility the Switch beats out the significant sales numbers.
