This January saw the 10th anniversary of Awesome Games Done Quick. Although the COVID-19 pandemic forced the well-known charity organization to limit itself to being online only, the fundraiser has all but suffered from the setback. A few days ago, it was announced that AGDQ had passed $1 million raised for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
Games Done Quick is far from a stranger to fundraising. Dating back as far as 2010, the charity organization has held two events every year, with the other event being Summer Games Done Quick. The most recent event, SGDQ 2020, was also forced to go online, although the organization still managed to bring in $2.3 million in donations from over 30,000 different donors. Before the pandemic, AGDQ 2020 raised a record-breaking $3.13 million in donations.
With AGDQ 2021, the official Games Done Quick Twitter account recently revealed not only had the event passed $1 million raised for the Prevent Cancer Foundation but that it had set a new personal best for the fastest ADGQ to reach the milestone. With the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing and everyone doing their best to quarantine, it’s not entirely surprising to see the gaming community unite to combat Cancer.
Out of curiosity, a Twitter user in the comment thread inquired if $1 million had been hit faster in any SGDQ before. Games Done Quick confirmed that AGDQ 2021 was indeed the fastest GDQ event overall to achieve the million-dollar milestone. With the aftermath of the pandemic being a stressful time for many people around the world, it’s great to see that 2021 is off to a somewhat good start.
Although some feel that the donations should go towards lesser-known diseases, it’s pretty cool to see that people are becoming more open to donating for a greater cause. With the added fact that the latest GDQ was entirely online only, it’s clear that Games Done Quick hasn’t lost any steam. With the COVID-19 vaccine slowly entering circulation around the globe, SGDQ may see a return to in-person events and an even greater amount of support for the cause.
Fellow speedrunners and supporters wanting to donate or join in on watching the various games done quick don’t have long before the festivities end. This year’s ADGQ began on January 3 and is set to end on January 10, and every donation made adds to the next milestone. For those that can’t make it in time, GDQ posts all of their impressive speedruns and feats of gaming prowess on the Games Done Quick YouTube channel. That includes an amazing attempt at a near 25-minute Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice speedrun by the #1 and #3 players of the game in the world.
