Biomutant Won’t Release Any Earlier Than April, Says THQ Nordic

Experiment 101’s upcoming action role-playing game Biomutant debuted at Gamescom 2017, when the first gameplay trailer revealed the title’s cat-like main character and open-world environment. The game is the Swedish developer’s first, and occasional trailers have kept gamers intrigued despite Biomutant‘s tenuous release windows, cancellation rumors, and long silences from Experiment 101.

A financial report by the game’s publisher THQ Nordic seemed to reveal that Biomutant could hit stores before the end of the publisher’s fiscal year. That would have meant the game would launch before March 31, 2021, which may have been a surprise considering there had been no definitive release date announcements. However, THQ Nordic has since clarified that the game’s launch is slated for the company’s next financial year, which begins in April 2021.

In a previous statement, THQ Nordic revealed that it considers Biomutant to be one of its biggest upcoming titles, with CEO Klemens Kreuzer calling it “a release of great importance.” The open-world title sets players on a post-apocalyptic journey filled with anthropomorphic mutated animals. The protagonist of Biomutant is a fully customizable mammalian warrior, with starting options for gender, body shape and size, fur style and colors, coat type, and initial mutation.

Although Biomutant features typical RPG attributes such as strength, vitality, charisma, intellect, agility, and luck, these numbers will change according to the character’s appearance. For example, a creature with a larger head will have greater intelligence, thereby increasing their psionic or mental abilities. As the game progresses, the mutated player character will be able to recode their DNA to adjust stats and also upgrade them with points earned by leveling up.

In addition to modifying their furry mutant character through standard RPG stat improvements, Biomutant players will also be able to impact their abilities and appearance by crafting weapons and adding biomechanical body parts, such as robotic legs or cybernetic wings. Players can also choose their fighting style, relying more on firepower, leaning more toward kung fu-inspired melee techniques, or using a combination of both.

The game’s graphics of are also part of what has prevented interest from waning despite Experiment 101’s infrequent updates on Biomutant’s development. The trailers and screenshots that have been doled out over the years reveal a bright, colorful, and detailed world that demands exploration. Hopefully, in 2021, additional news about the sci-fi RPG will be shared by its developer or THQ Nordic. The last significant information about the game released in the form of a 10-minute preview in June 2020.

Biomutant is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
