Nintendo Making Big Change to eShop Pricing, Says Developer

The eShop continues to be successful throughout the years, in part thanks to some of the discount deals on the Nintendo eShop. Gamers are able to get high-quality games at an extremely affordable rate, nut just as there are some incredible titles for players to grab for cheap, there are also a few bad apples to spoil the bunch.

Many users have sent complaints to Nintendo about the poor quality games on the market. While they do have low price points, one could argue that consumers get what they pay for. However, these games usually hold little to no substance, often coming off as a scam. For reference, some discounts have allowed for price points as low as $.09 on the Nintendo eShop in some extreme cases.

The reasoning behind the low pricing is clear. It looks like a publicity stunt to intrigue consumers to purchase the games, but there isn’t any consistent evidence that the financial gains from the stunt are worthwhile. Either way, it seems that Nintendo has already started to implement a rule to fix the trend 0f $1 games on the eShop. From now on, games are unable to go below $1.99 on the Nintendo eShop.

One of the developers at SMG Studio, responsible for titles such as Death Squared, stated on the r/NintendoSwitchDeals subreddit that according to new rules on the eShop, no game can be as low as $1.99. This is after the company announced that the release of its game would only cost $0.99 for the consumer.

Another part of the new rules that Nintendo is making for the eShop is that games that only cost a single cent will not be placed on the best sellers list anymore. This would effectively fix the issues of poor quality penny games flooding the sale market. At the moment, Nintendo has not publicly commented on the changes made to the platform, nor has it confirmed that the changes are permanently in place.

Nintendo has done very little to regulate the type of content that is allowed on the store; that’s why many game companies have been taking advantage of the eShop for possible social clout. The developers at SMG Studios even bragged about beating Nintendo’s eShop regulations after the changes have been made. While that huge discount is not available anymore with the price now at $14.99, it is still shocking to see that some companies are proud of cheap quality content. This is one of the first steps Nintendo needed to take to clean up its eShop platform.
