Regardless of what one may think of his movies, it’s undeniable that Zack Snyder is thoroughly intertwined with the current DC Cinematic Universe. As the director of several films in the franchise and architect of the tone and arc for the first phase of DC films, he has left a permanent mark on the characters and their world. That said, Snyder is soon to be a free agent, and DC isn’t the only game in town.
A recent New York Times profile of DC Film boss Walter Hamada has outlined the future of the DC Cinematic Universe, and unfortunately for Man of Steel Fans, Snyder isn’t anywhere to be seen. Though the director is currently finishing up his own version of Justice League to release on HBO Max, no plans have been made for him to direct further DC films, and there’s been no indication of him being in talks with Warner Bros. or DC about other Snyderverse projects.
Even if he truly is leaving the DC universe behind, Snyder clearly has a soft spot for comic book heroes, so when he was asked in an interview to give an elevator pitch for a Marvel film, it was no surprise he came prepared.
When asked what Marvel story he wanted to tell, Snyder cited a Frank Miller book entitled Elektra Lives Again. The story is right up Snyder’s alley too: Daredevil is being haunted by dreams of Elektra ever since her death, and through these dreams learns that plans are afoot to revive his nemesis Bullseye. Without any more spoilers, the story is quite moody and dark in a way that lines up well with Snyder’s sensibilities.
Clearly the story has captured his imagination, though even he admits such a project is unlikely to ever happen: “Daredevil is having these dreams about Elektra coming back to life, and it’s really cool and weird…It’s just cool, and beautiful. That’s what I would do. No one cares, but that’s what I would do.”
Though there’s no real talk of any project being set in motion, it’s not impossible either. Marvel has recently regained the rights to make new Daredevil content featuring the Netflix version of the character, and that series did have a version of Elektra who is presumed dead as of Marvel’s The Defenders show. Is Marvel likely to ever greenlight a project like that? Maybe not, but stranger things have happened, and no doubt Snyder’s on the hunt for his next big project even now.
