Disney Plus Moon Knight Series Brings Indie Directors On Board

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Moon Knight continues to roll forward with the announcement of additional directors joining the anticipated Disney+ series. The directing duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have been announced to join the team that will bring the cult favorite Marvel hero into the MCU.

THR broke the news that indie filmmakers Benson and Moorhead would join previously announced Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab as the directors behind Moon KnightUmbrella Academy‘s Jeremy Slater will be serving as the show’s head writer, and Oscar Isaac has reportedly signed on for the role of the titular hero though Marvel has yet to confirm any casting for the series.

Benson and Moorhead have proven themselves to be quite efficient filmmakers, often handling the writing, producing, and editing of their films in addition to directing. They first gained attention in the indie world with their 2013 low-budget horror movie Resolution. Acclaimed horror filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro later became a champion of their movie Spring while their sci-fi horror movies The Endless and Synchronic gained them more attention. Benson and Moorhead will reportedly be tackling multiple episodes of the Moon Knight series while the majority of the episodes will be directed by Diab.

The hiring of Benson and Moorhead follows the trend of Marvel Studios handing big franchises over to indie directors. Given the filmmakers’ background in horror, it also suggests that the series could be embracing the darker aspects of this very complex character. In the comics, Marc Spector is a mercenary who becomes Moon Knight after being given the powers of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. However, as he fights crime, Spector also battles his own multiple personality disorder.

Despite not being household names, Benson and Moorhead are interesting choices for the series and Marvel has been quite successful at finding new talent for their projects. This latest announcement only helps to build anticipation for Moon Knight which is shaping up to be one of the most interesting Marvel projects on the horizon. If the enthusiastic early reactions to WandaVision are any indication, these Disney+ shows could be a way for the MCU to go in some bold new directions.

Moon Knight will debut on Disney Plus, although no release date has been set.
