In early 2019 when Disney finalized their acquisition of 20th Century Fox, it was in many ways a dream come true for Marvel fans who had hoped to see the X-Men join the MCU. However, one foul-mouthed individual who may have not been as thrilled was Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.
A huge part of Deadpool’s charm and why he succeeded at the box office with over $1.5 billion in revenue from both films was the perfect marriage of the “hero’s” antics with Reynolds’ own humor making the perfect fourth wall-breaking cocktail that meant it stood out noticeably from any other superhero film. Thus, there lied the question of just how Wade Wilson would fit inside Disney’s PG-13 Marvel universe.
As it turns out, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has just confirmed Deadpool won’t have to tone down his personality when it’s time for him to join the MCU. In a very recent interview with Collider, the MCU’s mastermind said Deadpool 3 “will be rated R and we are working on a script right now.” Hinting further details, Feige said filming is scheduled to begin in 2022 at the earliest, with sisters Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin currently working on the Deadpool 3 script alongside Reynolds’ keen eye for comedy.
Feige is currently juggling a very busy Marvel schedule that features Spider-Man 3, Thor: Love and Thunder, and sequels for Black Panther and Doctor Strange. All that, coupled with Reynolds’ own commitments would mean Deadpool 3 definitely gets pushed towards the tail end of the MCU’s Phase Four.
While Deadpool 3 was already a given and it’s quite a relief to hear straight from Feige that the anti-hero will be staying on brand as a Disney property, an even more intriguing prospect would be how Deadpool could slot in for any potential crossovers Marvel has planned for the future. One thing is to let Deadpool have his usual fun and games on his own, but it will surely require some clever writing for him to be himself when he’s next to Marvel’s more family-friendly heroes.
All that is a long way from here. For now the best way to satisfy a craving for Deadpool -aside from watching the movies- is to tune in to Ryan Reynolds social media, where the actor constantly proves he and the character would definitely be really good friends.
