The official Overwatch Twitter page reveals a cryptic piece of lore, possibly pointing to a new hero. The tweet links to a letter involving sword masters connected to the Shimada Clan, of which Overwatch’s Genji and Hanzo were a part of.
Blizzard’s attempt at the hero-based team shooter is one that has seen a vast amount of popularity and acclaim. Since playable heroes are the bread and butter of the gameplay in Overwatch, new characters are an exciting prospect. Since release, Blizzard has utilized vague tidbits from the game’s lore, like pictures and short memos, to tease upcoming hero reveals.
This addition follows the same strategy, offering lore outside of the main cast while building on the game’s world. The letter is written by Asa, a blade-wielder, for her husband Kashiko, a weaponsmith. Throughout the text, Asa laments Kashiko’s responsibilities away from home, reminisces on the Shimada Clan of the past, and describes worrying events. Most significant to the game, Asa mentions the Shimada chose her to be their swordmaster. This expands on Genji and Hanzo’s animated short by revealing their teacher.
However, Asa’s past is not the only reason why players may think a blade hero is coming. She describes how their daughter appreciates her father’s gift, which from the context clues seems to be a blade. Asa decries the Hashimoto Clan, of which Kashiko is a member, for creating a dangerous environment for their daughter. Thus, Asa tells her husband about how she must patrol the streets as a protector. Whether the new hero is Asa or her daughter, the implication is that a blade-using hero is imminent.
However, Asa’s letter is not specific and does not come with any character reveals or pictures. The format and timing are similar to new playable characters reveals of the past, and Blizzard has said new heroes would be coming to Overwatch 2, so a potential melee character is not out of the cards. In any case, lore releases keep hype for the game going, and will likely encourage plenty of speculation from players.
Since the announcement of its sequel, Overwatch has seen little in the form of new content updates. While experimental mode offers fun new tweaks, it is insignificant in comparison to the previous content. It is known that Overwatch 2 will be showcasing changes, along with a story mode, but so far no new characters are known. It is possible that this letter may not be referring to a character, but the new deathmatch map Kanezaka, which is a town below Shimada Castle. Players will just have to wait and see what Blizzard has up its sleeve for future hero releases.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
