From an explosive, if uncertain start, Apex Legends has proved itself as a mainstay in the hero shooter genre. With a well deserved upcoming anniversary event, it has proved to be a favorite for many players.
Of course, as is the case with any ongoing series, especially team shooters, Apex Legends is constantly receiving balance fixes. Oftentimes these come in the form of nerfs for particularly powerful characters or weapons. Other times they are bug fixes dealing with new exploits or glitches. In the case of Mirage, however, a recent bug fix was supposed to buff one of his abilities, but it doesn’t look like things have worked out.
Mirage is well known for his Decoy ability, which projects a holographic copy of the character. This visual trickery can distract or confuse enemy players, leaving them open for Mirage to attack or get away. However, the Decoys don’t produce footsteps, so a savvy player can easily spot the fakes. A recent bugfix for Mirage rolled out to fix this, declaring that the lack of footsteps was, in fact, a bug and not a feature. However, one player reached out to Respawn saying the fix isn’t working, claiming that even as Mirage he could not hear his Decoy’s footsteps. Respawn’s Design Director, Jason McCord, promised to look into the matter.
This particular bugfix is very important to Mirage players, since fooling enemies is the character’s entire purpose. As proven by titles like Hunt: Showdown, audio cues are very important in shooter games. In Battle Royales like Apex Legends, they become even more important, since one tip-off can lead to very different results in a shootout. On top of this, Mirage has had problems with his Decoys before, with one glitch even making them float away. Mirage mains would really like his Decoys to be in a stable, viable place.
Mirage is already in a tricky place within Apex Legends‘ roster, and this fix is unlikely to change that. One dev declared that Mirage will likely never be top tier, since the necessary changes would make him too unfair towards lower skill level players. As such, Mirage players will likely always be hungry for any buffs Mirage can get.
Fortunately, Respawn is usually responsive when it comes to problems brought to them by players. After player backlash, the company re-tooled Apex Legends‘ battle pass, and while not everyone was satisfied, it does show that the company has its ear to the game’s heartbeat. Hopefully, that will soon manifest in players’ ears hearing footsteps from Mirage’s Decoys.
Apex Legends is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version in development.
