Wonder Woman 1984 Continues To Slip At The Box Office | Game Rant

Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 made $3 million at the domestic box office this weekend, a -45% drop from the previous weekend. Despite the first Wonder Woman film making more than $800 million worldwide, DC fans haven’t seemed to turn out for the latest entry.

Tenet reportedly lost more than $100 million for Warner Bros. earlier in the year, and Wonder Woman 1984 was one of the first major films to open in theaters since. The superhero sequel was released on HBO Max the same day as its theatrical release and became the most-watched direct-to-streaming film of 2020. On the other hand, its theatrical opening was far below expectations.

The film’s biggest markets this week were unsurprisingly drive-in theaters, about the safest alternative to streaming for locked-down film fans. Still, with roughly 60% of theaters closed on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 stands at just $32.6 million domestic total. The DCEU sequel did perform slightly better in territories outside of the United States and Canada. However, its $131.4 million worldwide gross still represents a low point for the franchise. If its box office woes continue, it’s not going to make anywhere near blockbuster numbers.

Some people who want to see Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters aren’t even able to. A record amount of COVID-19 cases plague Los Angeles and New York City, two of the country’s biggest movie markets. Those numbers need to go down, or the state of moviegoing in 2021 will only suffer further.

However, Warner Bros. has confirmed that Jenkins will return to direct a third Wonder Woman film. That means their view of the film’s success may be different from that of box office analysts. Plus, the film will leave HBO Max in about two weeks. That could definitely lead to a small box office resurgence.

The disappointing drop this week may sow doubt in the minds of investors. The next AT&T earnings call could shed some light on how they actually feel about the film’s performance. Until then, it may represent yet another casualty of the pandemic.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently available both in theaters and on HBO Max.
