It would be impossible to talk about some of the biggest and most revered video game publishers out there without mentioning Rockstar Games, the proprietors of the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series who have easily become one of the biggest and most celebrated developers in the industry for all the right reasons. Pretty much all of their games feature amazing character, beautiful open-worlds, excellent gameplay… and some of the greatest stories ever told through the medium of video games.
Grand Theft Auto IV is no exception to this, with the story of Niko Bellic being enthralling to watch unfold over the course of the game. Rockstar Games took bold narrative risks in Grand Theft Auto IV, and they definitely paid off in the best way possible. Everything from multiple endings to unique interactions was taken into consideration, allowing for a Grand Theft Auto title that feels way more personalized than anything else in the series.
So, for people who just finished this brilliant game and want to experience more stories similar to this title, here are ten games that can definitely scratch that itch.
10 Sleeping Dogs
Most people write off Sleeping Dogs as nothing more than just a Grand Theft Auto rip-off, but that’s actually doing this title a huge injustice.
Sleeping Dogs is a genuinely excellent title, featuring over-the-top action, excellent hand-to-hand combat, and a story that will keep players hooked for quite some time indeed.
9 Far Cry 3
Ubisoft might’ve become the butt of most jokes in the gaming community right now, but there’s no denying the fact that the company used to be revered as one of the greatest video game developers of all time, with Far Cry 3 perhaps being the absolute peak of their success.
Everyone mostly remembers Far Cry 3 for the powerful performance of Vaas, which should be more than enough to indicate the immense quality of the plot that is waiting at the disposal of players.
8 Watch Dogs 2
Another Ubisoft franchise that saw an extremely rocky beginning is Watch Dogs, with the first game falling under heavy scrutiny post-Ubisoft’s misleading visual display at E3.
Thankfully, the second game pretty much rectified most of the problems with the first. Hacking was now a way more effective tool and the story never really took itself seriously, barring some serious moments that actually hit home due to the likability of the cast.
7 Immortals Fenyx Rising
Ubisoft might not have had the smoothest run this year, but one game in particular that they managed to defy everyone’s expectations with was Immortals Fenyx Rising.
It’s saddening that the most marketing exposure it ever got was in the form of a controversy with the Monster energy drink, since Immortals Fenyx Rising is genuinely an excellent title that deserves the time and attention of anyone who loved Breath of the Wild and wants to see more games in the same vein. This is especially true when it comes to an immersive world with plenty of hidden secrets.
6 Mass Effect 2
While it’s true that Mass Effect 2 might be the greatest game in the trilogy, this place on this list technically goes to all the three Mass Effect titles due to the brilliant narrative that is interwoven in all the games.
The story of Commander Shephard is an extremely compelling one indeed, featuring some truly memorable moments that will remain in the minds of fans long after they’re done with this trilogy.
5 Deus Ex
The original Deus Ex was released all the way back in 2000, serving as the biggest and most accessible gateway into the world of immersive sims and emergent gameplay.
Of course, it certainly helped that Deus Ex was full to the brim with brilliant story beats and narrative highlights — the game was absolutely loaded with everything from conspiracy theories to corporate espionage.
4 Alan Wake
Remedy Entertainment might be known for some of its more popular IPs like Max Payne and Control, but most people tend to omit Alan Wake from this conversation, which is quite a shame indeed.
The fact of the matter is that Alan Wake is one of the most atmospheric games of all time, with a narrative that is bound to keep players hooked until the very end of the title.
3 Cyberpunk 2077
It would be impossible to mention Cyberpunk 2077 and not have people automatically think about the botched launch, the myriad of bugs plaguing the release, the disappointing nature of some of the game’s key mechanics, and the shady behavior of CD Projekt Red prior to the game’s release.
However, under the whole host of issues plaguing Cyberpunk 2077 is a genuinely brilliant title, with the narrative shining in both main and side quests to allow for a brilliant experience that will definitely bring back shades of The Witcher 3 in the best way possible.
2 Red Dead Redemption 2
However, it would be impossible to talk about games similar to Rockstar’s classic and not mention other games made by the same studio… especially the latest one, which is widely considered by many people to be one of the greatest games ever made.
It’s clear that the amount of work put into the details of Red Dead Redemption 2 is truly immense, with the world absolutely brimming with detail in each and every corner of the map. Of course, the open-world and gameplay is just one part of Red Dead Redemption 2 — the story is easily the biggest highlight of the game, showing that Rockstar truly went all out when it came to creating one of the most memorable gaming experiences of all time.
1 Grand Theft Auto V
However, at the end of the day, there’s really only one fitting recommendation for people who want to play games with a story that’s similar to Grand Theft Auto IV… and that is another Grand Theft Auto title.
It goes without saying that Grand Theft Auto V is still one of the best video games that a large number of people are playing to this day, with everything from the open-world to the story of this title being absolutely sublime. It goes without saying that people who get into Grand Theft Auto V will find it a thoroughly entertaining experience that will be hard to shake off anytime soon.
