10 Surprisingly Fun Dating Sims, Ranked By Metacritic | Game Rant

When it comes to game genres, players are sure to have their favorite. While it might not be everyone’s type of game, dating sims can be a surprising amount of fun. The multiple endings and choices a player can make is what makes the dating sim an enjoyable experience. With the amount of dating sims that are available, players are sure to find one that catches their interest.

Before trying a game in the genre, players will probably wonder how each game ranks compared to other dating sims. Be sure to read the description of each dating sim, certain games might be a bit of a surprise.

10 I Love You, Colonel Sanders! – 50

It came as a big surprise when KFC released a dating sim relating to Colonel Sanders. Players play as a cooking student, who meets the colonel during their first class of the semester. During each class, the player can impress Colonel Sanders, getting to know him more and more.

Players must choose what to say to the colonel to impress him. There are also mini games, requiring the player to press certain buttons and remember facts about KFC. Sadly, it only got a 50 on Metacritic.

9 Hatoful Boyfriend – 68

For anyone who has ever wanted to date birds, Hatoful Boyfriend is the perfect dating sim. The main character is a human, making it a bit odd to date birds. Players can decide which character to date — including their teacher — and choose the right options to truly express their feelings.

After getting every character’s ending, there is also a secret mode for players to play through. It goes through the setting of the game and explains how birds became smart. Hatoful Boyfriend has a 68 on Metacritic, but is worth trying out.

8 Purrfect Date – 72

Keeping with animal dating, Purrfect Date allows players to date cats. The game is located on Cat Island and has six different cats for the player to date. The point of the game is for players to go on dates with the cats to discover where they came from.

The game’s description says there is over 10 hours of gameplay and 18 possible endings. The game was also made by the same studio that made I Am Bread and Surgeon Simulator. Purrfect Date has a 72 on Metacritic, with a 5.3 user rating.

7 Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator – 72

Dream Daddy is a dating sim that was created by the Game Grumps. The player is a dad trying to meet and romance other dads. Players are able to customize their character, with the game offering 7 datable dads. There are also different personalities the player can meet — a goth dad, a teacher, a bad dad, and others.

The game also offers mini games and has many dad puns. Dream Daddy has multiple endings for each dad the player meets, as well. Metacritic gave the dating sim a 72, with a user score of 7.5.

6 Monster Prom – 73

Fans of the supernatural would enjoy this game very much. Monster Prom allows players to choose different monsters — such as a Frankenstein’s monster, a werewolf, and a devil — while trying to get a date to prom. The game is also multiplayer, allowing players to go against their friends.

Players have three weeks to get close enough to a monster and get a date. Items can be unlocked that give the player a better chance at getting a date. Monster Prom was given a 73 on Metacritic.

5 The Sims 2 Nightlife – 76

The Sims is already a life simulator, but the Nightlife expansion gives players access to dates. Sims can ask others on a date, going to different businesses or having a date at home. A meter will appear when on a date, with interactions either making it go up or down.

Having a terrible date can have other Sims leave flaming bags on the player’s doorstep, while having a good date will have Sims leave flowers. Metacritic gave Nightlife a 76 score.

4 Lovingly Evil – 77

Lovingly Evil came out in 2020, allowing players to fall in love with evil. Players can make their own villain, giving players hundreds of options for customization. The game takes place at the Villain Conference, where the player can go on dates with five different villains.

Along with dating others, Lovingly Evil allows players to take part in mini games and learn about being a villain. The game was given a 77 on Metacritic.

3 Arcade Spirits – 78

The dating sim Arcade Spirit takes place in the 2000s in a world where the 1983 gaming crash never happened. The player can customize their character, with them appearing throughout the game. The character also can pursue relationships — either platonically or romantic — as they work at an arcade.

There are also eight different characters for the player to meet and try to date. Everything the player does in the game — ranging from traits and relationships — will have an effect on the arcade. Metacritic gave Arcade Spirit a 78.

2 Emily Is Away Too – 81

Emily Is Away Too is a sequel to another game, called Emily Is Away. Like the original game, it takes place on a computer as the player tries to talk to Emily and Evelyn. The game focuses on talking to them through parodies of AOL and Facebook. The game takes players back to 2006, having the original look of many websites.

The main character is in high school, with the options chosen determining how senior year ends. Along with the messaging, there are YouTube links and Facebook profiles for the player to explore. Some players might feel nostalgia, while others get to see what the internet use to look like. Emily Is Away Too was rated 81 on Metacritic.

1 The Sims Hot Date – 85

The Sims Hot Date is considered to be one of the best expansions in the series. A downtown sub-neighborhood was added to the game and dating mechanics were added also. Unlike Nightlife, Sims do not get a meter to tell how well the date is going. Much like real life, players will not know if they are having a good date until it is over, even if they go to fancy destinations.

Also added is a NPC named Miss Crumplebottom who hits Sims that perform romantic interactions. The game was given an 85 on Metacritic.
