RPGs (role-playing games) can immerse players like few other video game genres. They place players in the shoes of a fictional character in a fictional world. This is the genre with the most impressive customization options. You know that you’re in an RPG when you make game-changing decisions that affect the plot.
It would be an oversight not to include a gripping main story in an RPG. In a saturated genre, there is plenty of room for missteps. Whether a game pays homage to classic RPGs or is inventive, it must tell a riveting story. Let’s take a look at which PC RPG main stories worked.
10 Undertale
Developer Toby Fox’s Undertale is an RPG where you don’t have to kill anyone. You control a child who has slipped into The Underground, a desolate place underneath Earth’s surface. Monsters dwell in this area and have been there since humans banished them from the surface. Eager for vengeance, the monsters can either be defeated or spared. You have the freedom to make choices in the game, which can affect the game’s ending. Undertale is a mesmerizing experience from beginning to end.
9 Fallout: New Vegas
Things take a turn for the worse when the protagonist of Fallout: New Vegas is left for dead in the Mojave desert. He is determined to confront the mobsters who did this to him and retrieve the Platinum Chip. This beginning scene is what sets forward the plot of Fallout: New Vegas. It takes place in the New Vegas region, which is mostly based in a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. It’s an over-the-top story to suggest a delivery man would confront a mobster, but this is no ordinary courier.
8 The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Although The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim contains a diverse set of side quests, the main story falls short of the third The Elder Scrolls game. The atmospheric nature of Skyrim is an improvement over Morrowind, but the length of the main story was short compared to its predecessor. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind occurs in the Morrowind region and revolves around The Tribunal, god-like beings who cast a shadow over the area.
7 Planescape: Torment
It’s linear, but it seems to work for the type of game. Planetscape: Torment is best played on the enhanced edition, which includes higher resolutions and a stunning new user interface. This is an RPG released way back in 1999 but remains popular because of its gripping story.
It’s a dark fantasy game that takes place in the Dungeons & Dragons realm. Find companions and work together to uncover Planetscape: Torment’s secrets in an immersive story-intensive game.
6 Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Origins was an instant-classic on day one. Although the Dragon Age: Inquisition sequel is also an excellent game, the main story of Dragon: Age Origins truly stood out. Dragon Age: Origins is an RPG with multiple storylines. Six storylines are determined based on your race and class selection. This voice acting is phenomenal, and the game presents you with interesting dialogue choices. Expect to spend over forty hours on the main story alone.
5 Mass Effect 2
Bioware’s Mass Effect 2 is widely considered the strongest entry in franchise history. The game’s dynamic characters and cohesive narrative made it stand out from other entries. Voice acting from well-known actors like Carrie-Anne Moss, Martin Sheen, and Seth Green made it an unforgettable experience.
Once again, players are placed in the shoes of Commander Shepard, who needs to put together an elite squad to take on a new elusive foe. It’s possible to have twelve companions in the game or fewer, depending on your in-game choices.
4 Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
The story of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is its strong suit. This story-intensive game presents players with game-altering dialogue choices. You must confront Darth Malak, a Sith Lord who’s set on taking over the galaxy. The story of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is filled with twists and turns, making it one of the best in RPG history. A remake is rumored to be released, and fans couldn’t be more ecstatic.
3 Persona 4
While waiting for the Persona 5 port to PC, it’s worth going back to experience Persona 4. Persona 4 was released way back in 2008, but the gameplay still holds up. A series of mysterious murders fuel the game’s main story, albeit you must fight more than the murderer since there is an uncanny darkness surrounding your character. The main story of Persona 4 is one of the best seen in an RPG. Expect to play more than sixty hours trying to beat it!
2 Final Fantasy VII
The Final Fantasy VII remake stood out for its exciting story, even if the side quests were uninteresting at times. Although the Final Fantasy VII remake was only part one of the original game, it told a piece of a larger story. Until all the Final Fantasy VII remake parts release, fans will have reservations about whether the remake has a better story. For now, the original Final Fantasy VII uses masterful storytelling that resonates with players.
1 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
As a game adapted into a Netflix series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is renowned for its immersive storytelling. The game has an abundance of side quests, but it’s the main story that glues the game together. The main story will take players over fifty hours, on average, and is filled with romance options and meaningful dialogue choices. It is about Geralt of Rivia’s journey to stop the Wild Hunt from attacking humans and Witchers. This devious band of attackers shows no remorse and must be stopped!
