Last year saw the release of Marvel’s Avengers, and while the game hasn’t taken the world by storm as Square Enix might have hoped, it’s still going full-steam ahead in the game’s post-launch content, including DLC characters. This post-launch content may end up reviving the game to an extent, hopefully putting Avengers in the same category as games like No Man’s Sky and Final Fantasy 14.
It’s important to note that very few of these characters have been confirmed additions on the way for Marvel’s Avengers. Some of these characters are confirmed and definitely coming, while others were part of a leak, and might have been shelved, might not be on the way for a long while, or might never have been on the table at all.
The characters that are officially confirmed for Marvel’s Avengers are Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, Clint Barton’s Hawkeye, and Spider-Man, who will be a PS4 exclusive. Kate Bishop is already available, while both Hawkeyes are likely going to have some fundamental overlap, though it’s certainly possible that their abilities will be treated differently enough. Both of these character’s stories are already pretty ingrained in the universe that Marvel’s Avengers has established, making them fairly straightforward early additions.
Spider-Man, on the other hand, has the possibility of really spicing things up, though his impact is going to be somewhat dampened simply because of his exclusivity. Because he’ll only be on one console, there can’t be too much story importance placed on him; that would hold the other versions of the game back. Instead, Marvel’s Avengers Spider-Man is going to have a self-contained story-arc, ensuring it doesn’t interfere with the main story.
There are a ton of leaked characters that are rumored to be future additions to Marvel’s Avengers; while it’s possible none of them make their way into the game, some of these characters could be fantastic additions. Some of these additions are more obscure characters for Marvel’s Avengers, while others are pretty well-known fan-favorites:
- Ant-Man
- Black Panther
- Captain Marvel
- Doctor Strange
- Falcon
- Hulkbuster
- Mar-Vell
- Mockingbird
- Quake
- Scarlet Witch
- She-Hulk
- Spider-Woman
- Vision
- War Machine
- Wasp
- Winter Soldier
Some of these characters, like She-Hulk and War Machine, seem like they would have to function similarly to the Hulk and Iron Man respectively, with some minor differences. Others, like Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch, seem like they would have to have some very unique abilities that make them stand out from the crowd. The same goes for Ant-Man and The Wasp; though they’ll probably be somewhat similar to each other, they’d be different from anything seen in the game thus far. To further hint that those last two characters could be a possibility, Pym Particles are already in the game, suggesting that Crystal Dynamics are already working on their functionality.
Certain characters here could have some serious narrative ramifications, as well. While characters like Winter Soldier and Falcon fit into the story already established in Marvel’s Avengers, others like Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange would act to further the universe. Captain Marvel could be a great stepping stone for introducing some of the more cosmic aspects of the Marvel universe, bringing in more Kree and Skrull stuff. Doctor Strange could be the introduction to the mystical side of the universe, introducing characters like Dormammu and Mephisto.
With the steep player drop-off seen in Marvel’s Avengers, it’s unclear if players are going to get any characters outside of the three that have already been confirmed. That will likely depend on how well received the planned DLC is, and whether or not that revives the playerbase. No one is sure what to expect from Marvel’s Avengers in 2021, but an influx of content that is more dynamic than the previous content was is definitely necessary to bring the game back into the spotlight. Hopefully, these characters, and the stories they bring, gather some more excitement for the game, and fans get to see some really cool additions in the years to come.
Marvel’s Avengers is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
