The Consumer Electronics Show, commonly referred to as the CES, is one of the biggest annual trade shows for tech. All of the major players in the industry show up with the latest gadgets. Last year at CES, Sony revealed the PlayStation 5 logo at its press conference, starting off a year of slow reveals of the company’s next-gen console. This year’s CES features Intel offering more information on its i9 11900K processor, including a release window in 2021.
Just what the full new lineup will look like has yet to be revealed, but the Intel did provide some details on just what the 11th Gen’s flagship i9 model will feature. The i9 11900K will be an 8-core, 16-thread chipset with a boosted clock speed that will hit 5.3GHz. The chip will support up to DDR4-3200 RAM, with 20 CPU PCIe slots allowing users to add on their Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics card or whatever else they might need to tack on to get their PC up to speed.
In and among all of the spec data, Intel revealed that the flagship Core i9-11900K processor will be available in the first quarter of 2021. There was no specific date to be found within that window, but at least now those eagerly anticipating a chance to upgrade now have some idea of when the new piece of hardware will be available.
Intel is looking to make a big splash in 2021 after AMD’s desktop CPU market share surpassed Intel’s for the first time in 15 years. Intel dominated the market for quite some time before the gap began to narrow starting in 2017. AMD’s Ryzen 5000 series generated substantial buzz, and now it is Intel that has to counter with the new Core i9 “Rocket Lake” processor.
Apple recently moved away from Intel chips in its computer lineup, with all new MacBook Air, Pro, and Mac Minis featuring its proprietary M1 chips. Apple is moving ahead with plans to continue its CPU development, so it looks like Intel has lost a major client in that regard.
Despite being locked in competition with AMD, Intel’s motherboards get a nice boost after unlocking the Smart Access Memory feature found on AMD’s lineup of RX 6000 Series graphics cards. Intended for AMD’s own Ryzen 5000 processor, the feature has been tested on an Intel i9-10900K, and provided a 14% increase in frame rate in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.
Intel is looking to start 2021 off right, and its flagship Rocket Lake processor certainly seems to have the power to handle the most demanding of CPU tasks.
