Even though the world is two weeks into 2021, many are still looking back on 2020 and the many high quality game releases that launched during the year. This includes review aggregate site Metcacritic, which has released lists detailing the top-rated games of 2020 for each platform. This even accounts for games released for next-generation consoles like the PlayStation 5, even though the PS5 has considerably less new games available to it compared to the older consoles.
According to Metacritic, the top-rated PS5 game of 2020 is one of the console’s only true exclusives, the Demon’s Souls remake. Propped up as one of the PlayStation 5’s premiere launch titles, the Demon’s Souls remake earned an impressive 92 average rating from critics, making it the only PS5 game to do so to date. While its status as a “remake” may hurt its value in the eyes of some, the Demon’s Souls remake has been praised for modernizing a classic, making important quality of life changes and vastly improving the graphics.
The rest of the top-rated PS5 games of 2020 earned 80 or above, with a couple more PlayStation exclusives making the cut. In fourth place is Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which earned an 85 rating. Seventh place goes to Astro’s Playroom, which had an 83 rating. Astro’s Playroom is unique in that it is a pack-in title for the PS5, coming pre-loaded with every console, so anyone that has a PS5 can check it out at no additional cost to them.
Here are the 10 highest-rated PS5 games of 2020, according to Metacritic:
- Demon’s Souls – 92
- Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition – 88
- Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate – 87
- Spider-Man: Miles Morales – 85
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – 84
- Overcooked: All You Can Eat – 84
- Astro’s Playroom – 84
- WRC 9 FIA World Rally Championship – 83
- Planet Coaster: Console Edition – 81
- DIRT 5 – 80
The rest of the list is comprised of multiplatform games. Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, the enhanced version of the critically-acclaimed hack-and-slash from Capcom, was the second-highest rated PS5 game of 2020, with an 88 average rating. In third place was Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate with an 88 rating, which combines all of the previously-released Mortal Kombat DLC into one comprehensive package.
The other games on the list include the popular co-op game Overcooked: All You Can Eat, as well as Planet Coaster: Console Edition, which earned 84 and 81, respectively. And finally, two racing games appear on the list, with WRC 9 FIA World Rally Championship getting an 83 rating and DIRT 5 topping out the list in the 10th position with an 80 rating.
2021 is still young, and there haven’t been any major PlayStation 5 releases just yet. However, that will change in the months ahead, with Returnal launching in March, and plenty of other PS5 games planned to release throughout the new year. It’s unusual for a list of the 10 highest-rated games of any year to include titles in the low 80s, so next year’s lineup should be a bit more impressive.
