Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is bringing the classic Wii U game to the Nintendo Switch next month, but it’s much more than a straight port. Nintendo is making some quality-of-life improvements to make Super Mario 3D World an even more well-rounded experience than it was on the Wii U, not to mention it’s adding a brand new adventure in the form of the Bowser’s Fury expansion. And now Nintendo has pulled the curtain back on exactly what fans can expect from Bowser’s Fury next month.
As revealed by Nintendo, the Super Mario 3D World Bowser’s Fury expansion takes place in a new area called Lake Lapcat. Unfortunately for the residents of the cat-themed area, a superpowered version of Bowser, Fury Bowser, is terrorizing the area, and so Mario is called into action to stop him. Unlike the base Super Mario 3D World game that features a collection of linear levels, Lake Lapcat offers a “free-roaming adventure” with the goal of collecting Cat Shines. Collecting enough Cat Shines will allow Mario to lighten darkened terrain and restore Lake Lapcat, which sounds more like Super Mario Sunshine than 3D World.
The Super Mario Sunshine similarities may be on purpose, as a character from that game will have a major role in Bowser’s Fury. While Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury doesn’t appear to have the 4-player co-op mode from the base game, it does have a 2-player co-op mode where Bowser Jr. is one of the playable characters. Bowser Jr. is armed with a paintbrush and can fly around the game world, so he should play much differently than Mario.
Mario won’t just have Bowser Jr. to help him in his quest to defeat Fury Bowser. A brand new power-up is being added called the Giga Bell, which transforms Mario into the massive Giga Cat Mario. Giga Cat Mario has been compared to Super Saiyans from the Dragon Ball Z franchise due to his look and how he seems to be overflowing with power, and so it will definitely be fun to see him go toe-to-toe with Fury Bowser when the game launches next month.
Meanwhile, it’s also been confirmed that the Snapshot Mode from Super Mario Odyssey will be making its way to Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury for the re-release. Essentially the Super Mario franchise’s version of Photo Mode, Snapshot Mode will make it much easier for players to capture screenshots of their adventure.
Throw in added amiibo support, and it’s clear that Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will be full of content for fans of the franchise to check out once it launches early next month.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will launch on February 12, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
