Review aggregate website Metacritic has released lists detailing the highest-scoring video games for each platform. This includes Microsoft’s Xbox One console, which managed to have four games released for it in 2020 that earned a 90 or above average rating from critics. Unlike the lists for the top scoring Switch games of 2020 or the PS4 list, though, the Xbox One list doesn’t contain many exclusives, though it does include a variety of titles that have been featured on Xbox Game Pass.
The top-scoring Xbox One game of 2020, according to Metacritic, was Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition, which earned a 91 rating. Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition is one of the games available for Xbox Game Pass, proving Microsoft’s desire to back up Game Pass with as many high-quality games as possible. Other Xbox Game Pass games featured on the list include Yakuza 0, which earned a 90 rating, and Doom Eternal, which had an 88 rating.
The only Xbox-developed game to make the list was Ori and the Will of the Wisps, which had a 90 rating. Even though Ori and the Will of the Wisps is published by Microsoft, it’s not exclusive to Xbox platforms. In fact, it’s not even console exclusive to Xbox. Not only is Ori and the Will of the Wisps available on PC and Xbox platforms, but fans can also play it on the Nintendo Switch if they so desire.
Here are the 10 highest-rated Xbox One games of 2020, according to Metacritic:
- Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition – 91
- F1 2020 – 91
- Ori and the Will of the Wisps – 90
- Yakuza 0 – 90
- Yakuza: Like a Dragon – 89
- Doom Eternal – 88
- Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 – 88
- Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition – 87
- Huntdown – 87
- Planet Coaster: Console Edition – 85
It’s interesting that two Yakuza games made the cut. Even though Yakuza 0 is a few years old at this point, the game, and the series in general, just recently made its Xbox debut. The Yakuza games have been PlayStation exclusives for years, and so it’s nice for Xbox fans to finally be able to play them. What’s even nicer is that the bulk of these Yakuza games are available through Xbox Game Pass, allowing subscribers to play through most of the Yakuza franchise at no extra charge.
The other Yakuza game that cracked the top 10, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, is notable for being a next-gen console exclusive for the Xbox Series X. Thanks to a deal between Microsoft and Sega, that game will not have its proper PlayStation 5 version until some point later this year. And considering the positive reaction Yakuza: Like a Dragon has enjoyed, it seems to have been a smart move on Microsoft’s part.
2021 will see Microsoft release many more console exclusive games than it did in 2020, starting things off with the Xbox Series X exclusive The Medium later this month. Halo Infinite is also due out this year, so it should be an exciting one for Xbox gamers.
