Thomas Happ released Axiom Verge in 2015 for the PlayStation 4 and PC, and it was eventually ported over to other consoles like the Wii U and Xbox One, and then later to the Switch. It’s a 2D side-scrolling action-adventure title that is heavily influenced by the Metroid and Castlevania series. It received positive attention from critics, currently sitting at a score of 84 on Metacritic for the PS4 version.
The developer is currently working on a sequel to Axiom Verge, appropriately titled Axiom Verge 2, and it’s scheduled to release sometime in the first half of 2021 for the Nintendo Switch after being delayed back in October of 2020.
Thomas Happ announced today that the original Axiom Verge is getting a free content update that adds in a Randomizer mode and the update is out right now for PC players that own the game on Steam and The Epic Games Store. As for players on consoles, the update will come out as soon as the developer “gets all of the kinks worked out.”
The Randomizer mode randomizes the items that players can obtain during their playthrough of Axiom Verge, allowing gamers to choose between three difficulty modes: Beginner, Advanced, and Masochist. Beginner is for those that want to experience the game the way it was meant to be. Advanced is for those players that want to use a speedrunning exploit or glitch their way through the game. And as for Masochist, the developer states that it “assumes you’ll be doing a low % speedrun” and that “there are exactly four people in the world able to play this mode.”
In the blog post, Thomas Happ also revealed that further updates will be coming to the game in the future and could potentially add a Saved State mode and Crown Control feature for Twitch streamers.
Axiom Verge is currently available on PC, PS4, PS Vita, Switch, Wii U, and Xbox One. Axiom Verge 2 will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive when it launches this year.
