Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Update Adds Wakizashi Sword

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players looking for a new stylish way of taking out their foes may be in luck, as Treyarch announces the arrival of a midseason melee weapon. Starting today, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players can unlock the Wakizashi Sword via an in-game challenge.

Like the previously added Streetsweeper shotgun and a sledgehammer, players will need to complete a specific task several times. In the case of the Wakizashi Sword, two finishing moves will have to be executed in ten different matches, a challenge that could prove troublesome due to how hard it can be to sneak up on players. Still, with the reward being a stylish companion sword to the iconic katana, many players will likely take the challenge on.

If the Wakizashi sword sounds familiar, it is for good reason. Not only is the weapon similar in style to Call of Duty: Warzone’s Dual Kodachis, but it was accidentally added to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War once already. Always intended to be a midseason drop, Treyarch slipped up a few weeks back, adding the sword to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War early. In response, the Wakizashi was removed from player inventories and the game entirely, and it has not been seen in-game until its grand return earlier today.

As mentioned by Treyarch in the blog post detailing the weapons arrival and the rest of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s new content, the advantages of the special melee weapon were detailed. Providing “a slightly better reach in exchange for speed,” players will be able to kill single enemies from a greater distance — though it is unlikely that they will be able to use the Wakizashi Sword to chain kills together. A special blueprint version of the Wakizashi Sword is also available in the Disavowed Assassin bundle.

The sword will be usable in Call of Duty: Warzone as well as Call of Duty Zombies, with the latter providing some great opportunities to specialize the weapon. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fans recently discovering a way to turn the sledgehammer melee weapon into Thor’s hammer Mjolnir via an electric Pack-A-Punch upgrade, players could be making some awesome fire and ice sword setups within the survival mode going forward.

With Call of Duty Zombies getting the Firebase Z map at the end of the season as well, it seems players will need all the swords they can get to take on the newest undead threats. While the unlock process seems to take some work, it certainly looks like earning the Wakizashi Sword will be worthwhile.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
