As announced after Jurrasic World Evolution was cycled out for Crying Suns last week, the Epic Games Store is officially offering one of the biggest free games it has ever given away to date. As of right now, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is officially available free of charge for anyone with an Epic Games Store account, with the shooter coming complete with its Celebration Edition content, which includes more than 25 hero skins and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker cosmetics.
The title will have no price tag for a week, with the special set to end on January 21 at 8 AM PT, at which time it will be cycled out for a new game. As always, next week’s offering has also been revealed, with the Epic Games Store announcing that Galactic Civilizations 3 will take Star Wars Battlefront 2’s spot as the next free title.
For those who didn’t play Star Wars Battlefront 2 at release, the 2017 shooter offers a range of multiplayer modes and maps based on each era of the massively popular sci-fi franchise. Unlike EA’s first reboot of the Battlefront series, that means players can fight through levels from the prequel era, including Geonosis, Naboo, and Kamino. They’ll also get access to maps based on the most recent trilogy of films, such as Crait, Ajan Kloss, and Starkiller Base. The game also features a campaign mode, with a canonical story centering around a squadron of elite Empire troopers in the events following the conclusion of Return of the Jedi.
As for next week’s game, Galactic Civilizations 3 is a comprehensive sci-fi strategy game, with players picking from a selection of unique alien species and making a bid to dominate the galaxy. Using espionage, diplomacy, warfare, technological advancements, and more, players will have to carve a name for themselves through the far reaches of space, communicating with other civilizations and attempting to surpass them. It was originally released in 2015 and is the third entry in the series, with Galactic Civilizations 2: Dread Lords launching all the way back in 2006.
It seems now is the best time for Star Wars Battlefront 2 to be available to countless players considering the series has recently made headlines, with the newly formed Lucasfilm Games confirming that EA’s exclusive rights to the license have now ended. Going forward, a number of different studios will work on experiences set in the expansive sci-fi universe, with Ubisoft announcing it’s in the early stages of crafting an open-world Star Wars game. Clearly, fans can get ready for some huge Star Wars titles slated to land in the next few years.
